Hey guys I am just curious what ESC is good for the ENV? I will be building one soon and was just looking for some advice. I am only interested in Castle controllers, and originally I was going to go with the Castle 160HV. I've since seen people's setups on 700 sized electrics running controllers as low as the 80HV. I thought these would not be good enough but maybe I am wrong? What determines the size ESC you need? And is the 80 too small? I don't want to be spending more money than I have to for features that my helicopter will not even need lol. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

It mainly depends on amp draw. The higher the voltage, the lower the amps. It will depend on how many cells you plan to run....

What speed controllers are you guys using in your ENVs? And what setups are you using? What flying styles? Thanks

I have used the Castle 80HV in several 700 class e heli's (including my ENV)without issue but I do not beat the heck out of my machines. If you do you may want something bigger. In my experience the 160HV also makes a bit more power (lower internal resistance) but it is much heavier than the 80HV. Until now there has not been anything in between however Castle now has a 120HV and this should be the ideal compromise between weight and performace.

Yea they also have the new 140HV, but they are more expensive. I am far from "beating" it out of my helis, but I am doing more than just hovering, that's for sure. In the future I also sure expect to get closer to that stage of "beating" . From what i've read, the 80HV is for hovering/sport flying right? I do mild 3D but would like to get into the more advanced stuff. I just don't wanna take the easy way out now and realize that I should have bought a bigger one. The 120 and 160 are almost the same price and if it was between those I'd go for the 160 in a heartbeat. it's between the 80 and the 160 because of the price difference. But then again, maybe the 160 is more than I really need...I'm not an expert on these big electrics lol.

I would for sure go with the 160HV. No doubt about it.

What I was getting at was,,,, If they are running the ICE80hv, don't you think that with your stated flying style, it would be enough for you as well???

Not to hijack the thread (and I agree with you Lou, well at least the 120) but how did you like, and or get-on with your new ENV this weekend??

I have the new 120HV in my 700e with the KDE motor. It is much smaller than the 160 and handled the 160 amp spikes with no problems. Just remember to change or disable the current limiting safety feature. My 550e won the speed run at IRCHA this year but the engine cut out after 3 or 4 consecutive 95MPH passes. When I checked my ESC settings (ICE 100) the current limiting was set to the default of 150 amps.

GScott, how many cells are you running on your 700e, and are 160amp spikes normal for a 700 size heli? I am in the same boat with trying to decide between the 80,120, and 160. I will be running 12s in a logo600se, and would prefer to try to save a little weight if possible.

I have pulled 220amp spikes with my KDE... With the power that motor puts out, the couple oz's extra are NOT noticed.

Yeah, that's what I figured....gonna probably go with the 160HV, was trying to get away with a lighter esc as I plan to turn a Logo 600se into a 500 for the time being, then back to a 600 with 690's...
