Can someone explain the difference in helicopter vs airplane nitro engines? Can a airplane be used in a helicopter?

They are carbed different and have different cylinder heads to keep them cool in a heli

Heli engines also often have a shorter crank shaft, making it difficult to put a thrust washer and prop on a heli engine and use it in an airplane. Sometimes possible, sometimes not.

Airplanes vs Helicopters
Hello Gary, I'm new to R/C and I fly a nitro airplane during Monday on the Palomar RC club here in North San Diego and I'm still in a buddy box trying to get certified to fly solo. I don't know much of the difference between the nitro airplane engines and a nitro heli engines. All I know is that it's easier to install nitro Airplane engines in the fuselage. I will be building my 1st T-Rex 600 nitro here soon. I will let you know how easy to install a nitro engine on a heli later after i'm done. All I know is that the airplane engines are easier to install. I hope this will help.

$6-700?!?!??!!?

That certainly is NOT the typical crash cost of a T-Rex 600! More like ~$130-150

Well, that was what I was told today Joey. I guess when you're in California everything here is expensive. Anyway, 2 heli crashed. One last week a T-Rex 700 and today a T-Rex 600 they're both nitro. And badly bent also. I don't know where they buy their replacement parts but I buy a lot of parts in E-Bay.
I really don't know how much will it cost where you at Joe1911?

I would speculate most people would agree that typical crash items are:

Tail boom
Main rotor blades
Flybar
Main Shaft
Spindle
Boom supports

2 T-Rex 600 tail booms are ~$13 locally, 2 flybars are $5.99, 2 Spindles ~$8, Boom Supports are ~12, Main shafts are ~$13. And Radix 600 blades are $95.

~$147, but that's with two of everything. If you count only what you use to replaced the crashed, you're looking at ~$120. Maybe add skids and struts or something, still a far cry from $600! Did he toast his engine or receiver too?

It's definitely possible to total a helicopter, but that's a pretty bad and rare crash.

Besides the obvious heat sink head on the heli engine-

- shorter crankshaft nose. Airplane engines have the length for the prop drive hub the prop and a spinner. heli's don't use the prop drive hub.

- crankshaft intake port timing is different AFAIK because typical airplane engines are spinning in the 12-13K range where heli's are in the 16-22K RPM.

- Carb's are bigger.

joe, it's pretty obvious you have never banged up a 600. $150 is a bad landing. $300 + is a crash.

Hey Joe,,,, you forgot "bearings." Every crash I've had that broke the blades also took out one of the main shaft bearings and at least one (usually two) spindle bearings.

And if the boom is bent, you might also need gears, TT, tail blades, and possibly bearings in the tail.

Now back to the original subject.

All I know is that the airplane engines are easier to install.

I've had the displeasure to crash both .30s and 50s, some harder then others, and I've never exceeded $150-$160.

$300 would be out of the ordinary, for myself as well as the people I've flown with.

I guess some of us are luckier then others
