the economy is in the tank, national unemployment rate at 9.5%, real estate market down 20-25%+, forclosures in metro markets up 75% for the year, 131,000 jobs lost last month, car sales down 20-25% from highs 2-3 years ago, stock market a fluctuating mess, loans hard to get, people are trying to save more, pay off credit debt, consumer spending has decreased...

...and yet, IRCHA attendence in 2010 is encroaching on it's all time high.

Explain.

I said the same thing when I covered my first IRCHA 2 years ago and gas was pushing 4 bucks/gal and they broke the all time event record.

That's easy! More people are entering the hobby every year.

The more people getting in the hobby, the more the stats will go up.

There is a huge number of people that the economy does not effect as bad as others. Like others said, it makes people happy!
So the ones not affected will be spending lots of money!

The more that know, the more you will see!

Cheers,
Raven

But you have lots of people that arent attending this year such as ron lund, and us here at indyhelis. The economy is affecting alot of us... IRCHA would be really bulging at the seams if we could all attend without financial worries.

it seems many shops are running quite tight. advertising is still down. maybe more shops did less advertising during the year to save up to go to IRCHA?

I would go to IRCHA but it just doesn't seem like it would be much fun, August in Muncie for example. I would like to watch some of the pros for a day and that would be about it.

my deal:

i was at IRCHA 08 as the Hirobo Product Specialist. If I hadn't been wrapped up in trying to organize everything (my first time there), I think I could have done the whole show in a day as a spectator. I was at least being paid to be there, so that helped

There are a few key pilots I'd like to see in person (Tareq, Curtis, ...), but otherwise, I don't mind watching them from the comfort of my air conditioned apartment and within a few steps of a cold beverage of my choosing.

Other than that, I've been asked by several vendors and industry reps to visit - that I'd like to do of course, but I talk to them via phone and internet anyway - though it would be good to put in some quality in-person time at some point.

I like the heat, but not without a beach, lake or pool nearby (as in, not just at the hotel). Maybe they need to construct an on-site above ground pool for next year?

Also, I don't have much in the way of vacation days. Would prefer to spend them with my gf and go to a zoo, historical site or some place more tropical where we could go diving.

Hey Barracuda, I may take you up on that. I am flying into Jax on the 21st and have a few hours to kill while my boss is playing golf with clients. Can you post or PM me the address/GPS for the field and I may stop by for a few hours and help/spectate.

Although heli's are expensive, no where near that of a big boat or racing cars-motorcycles what ever most of us like. When the economy goes down are hobby always picks up. I sit here typing this at IRCHA for my second year and plan on coming next year as well. for those who have not been ever make the trip you really do have to be here to believe it.
