I just picked up an old Kalt Hughes 500 and need to find out about it. The fuselage is fiberglass and the mounting rails are molded into the fuselage and covered in glass also. The engine appears to be an OS Max .56H from what I can see. The drive line is horizontal with the engine sitting upright. The tail rotor is driven by a wire from the transmission.
I posted photos in My Gallery.
All help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks-
Tom

It's the same drive train as the original Kalt 450 Cobra from the early 70's. It was more or less a copy of the Schluter system and made under license from Schluter. They are fairly underpowered from what I have heard. Maybe someone else can fill in some of the blanks that I have left. I'll bet that heli_headcase can fill in the blanks.

They were underpowered back in the day because all we had to fly with were loop scavenged engines. When PDP and Schneurle porting came out, the HP went up accordingly so a modern 40 or 45 would be more than enough power and run cooler too.

Kalt Hughes 500

Hi,
I have a kalt Hughes 500 , it has a primitive rotor head ,colective and cyclic pitch ,with the cyclic pitch input by the flybar tilting when you change the angle of the paddels.
but looking at the photo,s of yours it appears that yours is more primitive then mine with no colective pitch , but just cyclic control
The rest of it appears the same.
I have some photo,s of the trainer version in my gallery.

Kalt Hughes 500 - Information Needed

Hi Guys-
Thanks for the information sent so far. I am still looking for a manual or something like one to see how to set it up. I dis-assembled it today and had an interesting time getting it apart. All looks to be in good shape except that the grease in the alignment bearing on the top was totally dried out. The engine was an OS Max H 60, which had almost zero compression. I was toying with converting it to electric operation but don't know how that would work with the drivetrain in it.
geink, does your Hughes have the angled "wing stabilizer" on the starboard side of the tail? I have a hole in my vertical stabilizer about 4" up from the Fuselage, trying to figure what it is for.

My 'Hand' is raised...

Hey geink,

Is that an official, Kalt "Flying Box" in your gallery? If so, we need to talk.

APA-228:

I received your PM/email a few minutes ago. I too own one of the same models as you, but the collective pitch version and yes, it has the angled stabilizer wing but it doesn't look 100% correct.

I believe this (my) model was used by MRC for display, based on all the decals and the above average quality of the paint and assembly. As I remember, it has MRC servos installed too.

I have NO paperwork for this heli. I'm at the mercy of whomever does have good documentation. I'll PM my phone number to you if you feel like talking.

Kalt Hughes 500

Hi,
"R/C modeler" had a build review back in the 70,s on this Kalt heli, which was sold by MRC.
At this time my Hughes 500 does not have the angled horz stab on the tail , but I think it is suppose to.
when I received my kalt hughes 500 , I also received the training fuselage as in my gallery, I am not sure what the correct name of it is.

Thanks geink,

Yup, without any proof of pictures from Kalt-MRC, I can't say 100% that what you have is the "Flying Box" but what else could it be? I have some printed instructions by Kalt that loosely mention that chassis and I've always been curious about its construction details.

There were aftermarket training chassis available for Kavan Jet Ranger and Schluter-Hegi mechanics also, which I currently own. If full-size drawing patters were still available for the Kalt training chassis it would be very easy to cut the parts from scratch.

I have this still in kit form, but no manuals, except for the fuz plans.

Hope this helps..

There's a vintage Kalt B206 fuz in my gallery as well as the collective version of the mechanics. Likewise, no manuals.
