My local hobby shop invited me to demonstrate heli flight today at a public function they were asked to participate in, the dedication of a local walking trail. We were located about 1/2 miles up the trail, in a large open meadow, I demonstrated heli flight while another pilot demonstrated fixed wing flight. I put in a total of 48 minutes of heli flight over a 3 hour period. For many of the onlookers, it was their first exposure to R/C heli flight. Nothing fancy, hovering and circuits, but everything went well and it was well received. The helis gathered the most discussion and questions. It was fairly gusty today, and the fixed wing pilot thought I handled the gust well. Funny thing, I thought he did the same with his foamy.

This is the first time I've been asked to fly at a public demonstration, so I stayed well within my comfort zone. The rangers provided excellent crowd control, with everyone kept well behind my flight line.

A very good day indeed.

To me it sounds like you flew more impressive than many other pilots that make demos for a crowd that not know anything about rc helis. Many demo pilots fly so advanced that people dont understand anything and finds it boring. God job gmcullan.

Thank you all for your kind comments

Local reporters were there, as well as several politicians and VIP types in the crowd at various times. I wanted to make a positive impression for our hobby, and of course my local hobby shop. (Hog Heaven Hobbies)

Luckily, nerves weren't an issue. I've been a musician for 45 years, so I'm used to "performing" in front of people.

I think another very important factor is that I stayed WELL within my comfort zone. I had a couple of observers ask if I could do "stunts" or "tricks". Hobby shop personnel did all the talking for me, stating that while the helicopters were capable of acrobatic flight, our intended demonstration was of basic helicopter flight.

After each flight for the various groups as they came along, I brought the heli back to the group for a question & answer session. These went very well. And surprisingly, most of the questions were thoughtful. Yes, we did get some of the how fast/high/far sort, but we answered them completely. Surprisingly, the fixed wing aircraft generated little comment or questions, even though that demo pilot did a great job.

We did set up a very well defined spectator line and flight line. I stood 50' forward of the spectator line. Other than take off and landing, I kept the heli at least 30' out from myself. My ground crew also knew that if for any reason it appeared that the heli might come back to my position or beyond, that my intent was to hit throttle hold and bring the heli down immediately.

Over the course of the demo period, I flew my Blade 400, Align T-Rex 450SA and 450SE, and Thunder Tiger Mini Titan.

I had so much fun that given the opportunity, I would do this again in a heartbeat.

Gerry-
Excellent post!
We live in a world where people are way fast to criticize and all to slow to applaud excellent work!

What you did for your local Hobby store and the promotion of R/C helicopters is excellent!!

This is the kind of post I truly enjoyed reading on RunRyder!

I did something similar 2 years ago. The event organizers arranged to have insurance cover for one pass over the crowd when I dropped small packets of sweets for the children. They ran and screamed to catch them.
It was good fun. The sweets were dropped from a box attached to the front of the skids and the hatch was opened by a servo on a spare channel.

David, thank you for your very kind words. From what I've read in the past, it sounds like one heck of a helicopter event that you guys put on. Kudos to your group too!
