OK, here's one for the old salts. Does anyone know what kit this BK-117( I think it's a BK -117 and not an EC-145 but could be wrong)might have been built from?

It was rescued from Flea-Bay today by yours truly and I'm sure it will need a thorough going over. The nitro power plant will be replaced by e-power with either A123 or lithium-polymer cells.

I'm wondering if it was an old Hirobo or Graupner kit or maybe even an older Vario.

Any helpful input will be appreciated.

Cheers - Boyd

I also have this rotor which is brand new. It is a bendix as Paul stated.

Cool bird. The blades that fit that head are such an unusual configuration. Can anyone share how well they flew? I wonder if a modern digital flybar would make that thing fly like it was on rails.

Once electrified, it will have a Helicommand Rigid so I'm sure it will fly a lot better (defined: easier on the dummy with the TX - me).
Thanks for all the inputs Gents.

I was hoping it was of German ancestry. I had a WIK Kestrel sailplane with an 8' wingspan back in the early 70's when I was doing the League of Silent Flight thingy and was a member of the San Louis Obispo S.L.O. Flyers RC club. The kit was awesome for its day with deployable spoilers and flaperons. It was a real gentle thermal riding giant.

Sorry for the ramble. I paid $800.00 for the BK-117 and feel like I did well at that price. My wife will kill me as I have been selling down my 45 year collection of RC toys due to health reasons. The upside is 9mm slug from her Glock will beat the heck out of chemo or radiation poisoning. Just like some folks can't turn a stray pup away, I couldn't pass this heli by without giving it a second life.

I saw it on eBay and wondered who would eventually score it. Congratulations! I wish I had the cash so that I could have bid on it.
Good Luck with your restoration.

Boyd, I would have done the same; and the same mind set as you have described. Enjoy the process .... build, fly, rebuild, build more.

that looks like Dave Davidson's old BK117.
If it is, I have a bunch of pics of it from a fly-in in Pennsylvania.
I'm gonna have to go looking for those now.

Dr. Tim, you are right!!

When I saw this fuselage in person (assuming this is the same one, but I am pretty sure it is as I don't think there are two WIK BK-117 with the Suffolk County Police scheme on them in the US)I took the pics of it in 1989.

Dave Davison is registered on RR and has posted once in a while so hopefully he will see this post and chime in.

The heli was bought from an estate sale agent. This brings the question, is David Davison still with us?

Thanks for anything you can find related to this heli. I would be happy to pay shipping for the pics so that I might scan them and then return them to you. PM me here if you have any luck. The pics will be used to show the heli in its heyday and then I'll be doing a photo/video record of the restoration and e-conversion for publication.

Right now I'm trying to get a correct UPS tracking number from the agent..........hope I have not be burned in a scam.

Oh ya I am still here. Have not built any scale for awhile, have a Vario Dauphin sitting in my workshop gathering dust :-( Yes that is a WIX body with Vario mechs. The head is a scale bendix head it flys good. I still have mine and flew it alot with a Enya 61 for power, power was marginal. Bought a Rossi 65 for it and never installed it. The flying was done before electronic stabilization systems and heading hold gyros. Keep the headspeed down and check the blade bolt holes as they tend to elongate.I'll try to dig up a picture of mine. Let me knoe if you have any questions. Good luck with it. Dave Davison

UPS crashed the BK-117 on my doorstep last night. The packing job was really poor. The dream of getting this old bird flying again is over. We'll see how long it takes to get our $800.00 back.

Boyd, I'm sorry to see that. I know you probably had it rebuilt in your head already and to be disappointed like that is a damn shame.
