Running Rich

It sounds like your engine is way to rich, which is fighting the gov. Thus, you end up with a pulsing motor.

I had that happen with an OS50. I just leaned out the low end, and that was the fix.

Verify that the 7100R setup is correct. If the 7100R endpoints are jacked up it can make the governor do some odd stuff while trying to maintain HS. Quick way to see if the setup is close go into a linear throttle curve (with governor active) and verify the the governor active light comes on (on the rx)when the throttle goes to 25% in/out (on the radio).

I agree with you but the problem is motor (55) should not be rich at 1/2 turn out on main and mid needles and still is!!! even had to lean out the low quite a bit even after that to keep it from loading up at idle, and that was with 2 different carbs to boot! This is also after he had been at field and had other experienced people helping him and couldnt lean out motor enough. And the hyper we tried last night was not running rich but did have a bad bearing. Charlie is changing bearing to see if it helps the hyper motor.

I recalibrated the 7100R many times and it made no difference. I work at a hobby shop part time doing heli setups and am very familiar with setting up these gov's and fly them in my machines and never have seen this happen on any of them even on motors that are being broken in at full break in settings on needles. Have his throttle endpoints at perfect 100 100 and gov light comes on at 25% like it should and sensor is reading. This is a strange one for sure.

If you watch videos of raptor wah wahs on youtube it almost looks like that when it happens BUT that was a oneway problem on raptor and we even replaced whole auto hub assembly in his velocity and it wasnt that and you can clearly see throttle servo hunting when canopy is off and noise happens. You disable gov and problem goes away.

What throttle servo? What voltage running to throttle servo?
There were some issues with the original velocity oneways slipping but that problem shows up quite different than the motor surging you are experiencing.

To summarize you changed motors, throttle servos, and still have issues. If your setup with motor, servo, and rx are correct, and you said it runs without surging with the governor turned off I would say that the governor function on the 7100R is causing this.

good luck and update to let us know what it was

Your welcome on the setup cant wait to watch the smackdown flights!!!!

We have tried the following:
3 different throttle servos, 1 metal gear and 2 plastic geared
2 different carbs on OS 55 motor
2 different 7100R rx's
4 different Gov sensors

Tried different set of main blades (before we saw thottle servo jumping) as he bought 620's and previous owner was running 600's

Tried align Gov with regular 921 rx

2 different pipes (thought motor being so hard to lean out might have been a pipe issue building to much pressure in tank so he tried my hatori and no change

New one way on main shaft

Setup model on my radio from scratch to rule out an issue with his TX even though his other helis were fine

Tried different motor which was the last thing we did since he needed to change rear bearing which I believe he finished doing today.

Will absolutely let everyone know what it is as soon as I find it.

ummm, how about installing the 55 in another bird??? I know it sounds simplistic when there is a carbueration problem. This is a very weird problem. Looking forward to the solution.

stang281472 i know you changed the one-way, have you checked the main shaft bearing or bearing blocks for out of round? Does the tail rotor system rotate smoothly without any bindind?

success

well changed the bearing in the hyper as tom suggested. Went to field Tom checked heli over. Damn it was gone no noise no wag no pulsing fixed. All goes back to a bad motor (55) that now all see what OS is going to do for me. I want a new motor No one including Tom has seen anything like this So thanks to Tom Heffels patience and knowledge this heli is flying and not in the garbage So im signiong off with a big thanks to everyone that followed this thread ( charles HOTSTART restivo)

noise

yes that was rear bearing in the old hyper we put in to replace the 55 The 55 is brand new it was untuneable from is first flight.Tom decided back at elwood just to take head off motor for a look .The SLEEVE basicaly fell out of motor ???????? never ever seen that ever now lets see what hobby services does for me . Wild man absolutley wild. That has to be creating some , kind of blow by issues . which in turn is creating the overly rich condition Which in turn was causing the hunting problem which was evident from intial spool up. Definetly one for the books again a huge thank you to tom heffel from elwood hobbies and all the guys there . Rich ,Don, Chris, Al for helping me keep my calm enhanced and the machine out of the garbage bin.

As Charles said we were successful in getting problem fixed. The OS 55 needs to go back to OS to have them check it out. As stated earlier in this thread we swapped the 55 out for an old 50 hyper charlie had from another heli. Unfortunately found out on start up that rear bearing was making noise. We had test flew anyway and problem was nearly gone until bearing started getting louder during flight the problem started to appear again BUT still was nowhere near as bad as when 55 was in heli. Told him to change rear bearing and we test flew today and problem was gone. I dialed in the motor and did a 3D flight and not once did it have the problem. Charlie then did another flight (first time he actually got to fly it with problem not there LOL) and it was perfect for his whole flight too.

Now something interesting that I found when checking out his 55 motor before he sends it back. I pulled the head off and the sleeve slides out with zero effort. Usually they are a tight fit in the case and this one practically falls out!!! Wondering if that could be causing blow between the case and sleeve and into the ports and cause the overly rich problem that makes you have to close the needles to 1/2 turn open on 2 different carbs. And even at 1/2 turn from closed it was still too rich but would at least not leave a puddle of fuel on ground on spool up. He is sending it back to OS and we will see what they say. In the meantime he is going to fly it with current motor until he gets new motor from OS.

Andersons

Yes that was the rear bearing but on the hyper 50 that we substituted for the problem engine (OS 55)

z11355

Yes the bearing he removed was very rough and notchy when you spun it but remember this was an old motor that we swapped in place of the 55 that was the real problem. It wasnt the problem with the 55 which was brand new. As I mentioned above the sleeves fit in the case on the 55 is very suspect at this point.

I would like to thank all of you who followed this thread for your input and suggestions. It was nice to see Charlie get to finally get to enjoy the heli after all of this.
