I just put my 500 together with the 500m motor and I hovered for about 5 min and the motor was pretty hot, I could keep my finger on it but it was hot. Is this normal for this motor? I don't think my gears are dragging or anything and I don't feel lots of friction in the heli so why is it getting hot? If I bump up the rpm more will it be more efficient and run cooler or should I look at something else or is this just normal for the M series motor?

Yes, all align motors are designed to run fairly hot. Hovering causes a little heat to build up but it won’t hurt them.

Sweet thanks for the info, I was just wondering because the other motor I was running was not hardly getting warm at all. Just wondering what the temp range of the 500M is or what is the max temp I should let it get? Also about what temp is it when it is to hot to touch I mean about how hot can a human finger stand before it is too hot and has to pull away? I dont have a temp gun and was just wondering about what range it was running.

LOL @ this thread. I've owned two of the first Trex 500s, both of them ran very close to the same temp. And that is VERY HOT.
I measured them @ 60-70 degC after some enthusiastic flying. As a side note, I can add that Trex1 was sold after 300+ flights (no issues whatsoever), and Trex 2 still lives happy ever after by me. I fly 4 packs DIRECTLY after each other every time I fly the 500.

I replaced the engine with a same spec Scorpion, and I get a measured temp of 35degC, after the same flying routine.

The human finger is a personal thing, and varies quite a bit. In general 40-50 degC would be hold able.

Concentrate on your weaknesses and your strengths will reward you!

General rules for brushless motors.
180F and below is good and cool.
181-200F is or but considered hot.
Over 200F and you are headed for a burnout.
