How does one go about doing a range check (72Mhz) with the motor running? (electric) Take the blades off?

Yes - definitely take the blades off. If you're radio is PCM, it probably has a fail-safe state (if you've set it up), but I wouldn't take the chance. Headspeed + no radio = very, very bad.

Blades Off..... YES!!!!!!!!

Then put a board or something throught the skids so that it cannot move or tip over.... then do you range check.... but also do not use full throttle without the blades.... and make sure there are NO LOOSE bolts on the head that can be thrown.....

Thanks Guys! That's a good idea to put a board through the skids. I wouldn't even have thought of that.

I do have a PCM radio, and I set the FS, but I'm wondering what everyone does for throttle and pitch in FS? I set it up for a basic hover pitch (+2deg) and lower throttle (@ 35%). I'll be doing mostly AP work and sport flying. Very little 3D, if any. I'm wondering now if it would be better for the throttle to go to 0. ??
