Solution?

So, is the concept of running a separate receiver battery the safest option here? Seems a small LiFe pack would do the deal simply and reliably. Thoughts?

I have been thinking of going that route ,Lifepo4, and would save me a lot of trouble and $$ if I did.

The Outrage 550 I currently enjoy was previously set up with a Perfect Regulator and small lipo. I thought it made my bird a bit heavy, so I installed the Pro BEC. So far so good, but it's a 6S machine and not quite the voltage of the larger birds. I think it is still just as suceptible to a failure like the one mentioned. I hope I escape the fate. I kept both the lipo and the Perfect Regulator just in case, but if I need it, it would be an expensive problem to cause it! Fried 8717's, Spartan, 8900G, for example.

my solution

ok, so i spent a lot of money replacing all of my component, not using any from CC of course. I kept all my bills. at ircha i am going to go to the CC booth and plunk down the papers and tell them what their $40 POS part costed me. Depending on the outcome of that, which i assume will not be good, i have created a small sign to wear around my neck that says "Castle Creations cost me $****" and wear it around the entire week end.

for those of you that are using CC products and are happy with them, rock on! i wish mine would have worked. my problem is that a company sold me a component that, they know, caused the failure and distruction of all of my electronics. they know this and will not give any recourse for there mistake.

So if you see a 260lb guy full of tattoos wearing a sign bashing CC at ircha, say hi. Its me!

i also noticed that no one from CC has chimed in???? i know you guys follow the forums, where are ya??? hello??

thanks for the support from everyone!!! i owe ya a beer

I just had a conversation with a guy that has over 500 flights on his Logo 500 using the CC Pro BEC without any problem. He is running 6S. Is this problem due to too high a voltage for the BEC to handle or is it a QC issue? Maybe some CC reps should chime in here!

im waiting!!!

ive been waiting for anyone from CC to chime in here. I think their absence speaks more loudly if they did come on here and try to explain what is happening. lack of QC and testing prior to shipping for sure.

After reading this thread and several others I am very glad I decided to go the route of the LifePO4 2S battery pack instead of the BEC.

I am running the Jive 80HV and even though it has a high quality BEC I opted for the seperate power source. Just thinking ahead about possible back EMF from motor speed changes and servo motor operation. The battery pack acts somewhat like a buffer to absorb these spikes. Providing a cleaner more stable power source than the built in or stand alone BEC.

I just ordered the WRL-HBECS Western Robotics Hercules Super BEC (14S 10A/15A Peak) to go on my Logo 600. I couldn't find room for a separate A123 or LiFe RX pack.

Anyone know if there are frequent problems/failures with the Western Robotics BEC's?

Sorry to hear of loss. Weekly there are posts of CC becs and escs either fire or failures it's getting quite serious IMO. I've ran the internal becs of the Kontronik jazz and jives since beginning with zero issues.

CCs' customer service is good it has to be. Good people there as well but IMO the QC still has a hard road yet to earn on the heli side. I do hope it all mends soon be well.

i wonder how much castle outsells kontronik. Is it possible what we're seeing here in part is the fact that if castle outsells kontronik 10:1, your likely to see at least 10x as many problems from castle products for a similar failure rate?

It seems clear that kontroniks are more robust and better controllers, but many of the folks putting a $400 kontronik esc on their machine are also expert level as far as setup, where a lot of those putting cc controllers are beginner to expert level, depending. These factors statistically will stack up, not sure to what level.

Its just like a logo, awesome heli but poorly configured, set up by a newbie, it might appear to have all of these "problems" and be a "piece of crap" when a good percentage of problems are caused by inappropriate setup (servo choice, wrong vbar setting, wrong gearing, etc)

something to ponder, i'm not sure what the answer is. I would like to try a kontronik at some point on my L600. For pretty good stickbanging, i get about +/- 125 rpm, will the kontronik hold a lot better?

Yes indeed rpm fluctuation is a 20 rpm spread on the jive tops with good packs the difference between the two in governor function is night and day really. I understand your comparison on sales thing is however that ironically a CC takes a ton more tweaking to get to work over a Kontronik. You can stick program a jive in 3-5 minutes tops and fly and not touch it again therefore easier for beginners as well. In planes the CCs seem to air well from not such demanding systems however as we all know helis in the RC world are by far most demanding on electronics by far. 400 may seem a chunk but when you factor in what a heli is worth on the large electric side it's not so critical and piece of mind is priceless all IMO of course.

Depending on the the set up depends on what esc I use ,I prefer Kontronik for reasons posted about CC but when I do use CC or need it I use Western Robitics ebec . I too have had bad expierences with CC . You have to take in consideration that if you want to keep cost down you use lesser quality parts .

I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

WOW! +/- 20 is pretty good, how does that feel in the air, does the tail hold better? does the vbar feel more locked to the consistent headpseed?

Of course whole experience overall is better tovtrplicate maneuvers. No diff then the nitro guys on their comparisons of better governors etc...
