That's nice.... You should use 15%... If you want to buy a new engine every few months you may use 30%

I stuck with 15 for many years (2-3). Thought Id make the switch this year. I must say it does offer more than a little extra power....
Forgot to say
ATG in ATG mode, back plate sensor, 1980 HS.

Nitro percentage has nothing to do with engine longevity.

keep the temps upon landing around 190-198F and a 5 count on the low needle when pinching the fuel line.

She sounds good and the 4-5 secs on the back plate is perfect. The only thing I can see is your gyro gain is a little low.The tail swings to the right a little on punch outs.Looks really good other than that, maybe 4-5 clicks up in gain.

you can hear the difference in the transition from low to high needle
either the low is a lil bit lean or the high is a bit rich

I would adjust the high to a couple clicks leaner
if it get hot by leaning the high
then richen your low a bit

either than that sounds ok

if U run 30% add the shim
15% remove the shim
if your killing your engine it's because your running lean

30% gives you more power and cooler temps so motor will last longer .

I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

Shims, stock gasket in now (was on 15 as well)
When shimming are you adding to stock gasket for 30% and/or removing it for 15%?

If you can only hold your finger on the back plate for 4-5 seconds that is too hot and you will be way above 200F on the head. Sounds like your rear bearing is on its way out.

60% of the time, it works every time!

I remove the stock shim for 15%
and put back for 30%

I have tried 30% but switched back because it cost more for less flight time, if I was competing I would run 30%

did you switch fuel because you felt it needed more power?
if yes > it might be that the ring needs replacement

it takes < 1 lean run to F-up your ring

incidently did you re-adjust your low needle after switching fuels?

Ive always checked the back plate like that,5 secs was 190F between the block and head with the temp gun.

Motor has about 3 gal of 15% and 1gal of 30%. Bearings replaced this winter. Dis assembled motor after 2 gal just to see how it looked. It looked spotless. Do not think I have ever run this very lean or hot. Never been hotter than 5 sec. on the B/P. Installed the ATG at the start of the gal of 30%, using back plate sensor so I had the B/P off and it all looked as new.
I think its tuned pretty well but posted to see what others thought.
Main Ndl is just an ICH to the lean side and at this point not sure on the HS Ndl, went out half a turn when I switched and have been back-n-forth 3-5 clicks either way, couldn't say exactly.

All I know is I run around 190-200F on the head and I can hold my finger on the back plate indefinatly.

IMHO the backplate is not an accurate way to check anything. Too many people have different tolerances to pain and heat. Temp the head and pinch the fuel line are the best ways. And then LISTEN to the way it sounds when going into TH and transitions.

I couldn't agree more. I have fairly soft sensitive finger ends and I can still hold my finger on the back plate for a long time and it only feels warm. This is with good power on 20% nitro, 4 point tick tocks, fast aileron tick tocks etc.

60% of the time, it works every time!
