Hello guys,

I just finished building and maidened this used but beautiful Joker3DD helicopter this weekend with an MFS head. This is the DualDrive (DD) torque tube version of the Joker3 helicopters. It flies great and I have already started to do some 3D with it. I attached some pics below including some of the build.

For you guys flying Joker3DD's, at what rpms do you spin your tail blades at? I tached mine at 8,900 rpms yesterday and am wondering what is recommended for 3D flight.

Thanks for your help.

looks great.
Does the kit not come with an FG canopy?
Looks like you had to cut some of the canopy away to clear the main gear?

For the love of the hobby

Thanks Gorn. No the kit does not include a FG canopy as far as I'm concerned (got this one used so don't know for sure). Yes, this canopy had to be trimmed on both sides to clear the large main gear.

Well, today I tached my 700E's tail rpms for reference and it was spinning at 9,740 rpms on idle up. I spin the Joker3DD main blades a bit slower than the 700E so I'm thinking somewhere between 9,000 and 9,500 rpms should be plenty for 3D flight. I set it's tail today to 9,360 rpms. The tail holds but it tends to blow out on some maneuvers which seems to be due to the tired 25C packs I'm using. Looking to order some 45C's for the tail this week.

If anybody wants to share their tail setups, feel free. Thanks.

Hey Carlos

You MUST use good packs on the tail with a high current ESC...at least 80A.

Your TP45C packs should do pretty well.

Your tail RPM seems fine.

This is the first Joker 3DD that was made. A dual stage main drive system was soon to follow. This version came with a Plastic canopy where the other version comes with a fiberglass canopy. I have one just like this.

The current Joker 3 canopy fits excellent also to the 3DD. What you should do is to add two pins with a rubber tip under the big gear wheel to avoid contact with the canopy. The canopy can contain the big wheel without any problem.

Hey Carlo, yeah this past Wednesday I ordered a couple of 4S 2600 ProPower 45C packs to power the tail. Those packs should certainly help with tail hold. I'll keep flying the tail with my watts-up wattmeter installed to see if I need to replace my current Jazz55-10-32 ESC with a higher current ESC. So far I'm only pulling around 25-27 amps peak with the older 25C packs and blades spinning at 9,300 rpms (I don't normally do high power tail moves either, which helps keep current low). I'll keep an eye on that.

Hello Gerd, good to know that about the canopy. Is the Joker 3 FG canopy that you are referring to part number 604? If so, I may go ahead and order it later on to see how it fits on my 3DD.

I also went ahead and ordered a second shaft collar to double them up. Hopefully I'll receive that either today or tomorrow to get a first flight video done.

Yes, sometimes used in Scale helis, seen f.e. in a big S64 Skycrane and in some fenestron models.

You must simply use an esc in governor mode, f.e. Jazz 55LV or Jive 60LV.

Hello tanguy, I'm using a Jazz55-10-32 in heli mode for the tail motor. I hooked up the ESC to an auxiliary channel in my DX7 (AUX2). This allows me to operate the tail motor with a two point (on/off) switch independently of the main motor. I program the two governor settings via the channel end points to control the tail rpms.

Fancier radios should give more control options. But this method works fine with the DX7. Just make sure your tail ESC has a soft start if you use this on/off method. The tail motor and ESC come down only warm to the touch. Hope this helps.

No program mix, only a free channel on your Tx and when you prefer different tailrotor speeds then combined with flight phases.
You can use generally all usual controllers with governor (heli) function, but you should use one that is really reliable, looking on the special function the controller is doing. I will not speak bad about certain brands but would recommend that you use such controllers that are carefully tested for that, especially in a scale model.

Hi
I bought a JAZZ 55.
kontronic are the best ESC.
I have a jive 80HV on my RIGID.
for the chanel of the TX, the AUX2 in the JR is the gyro gain.

but with the kontronik soft I think it will be more easy to program.
on gear chanel or aux4.
I will see

thanks for your reply

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have a question with regards to the motor selection. I'd like to use a Scorpion motor specifically the 3026 series, prob the -1000 motor with a 3s pack. I've calculated that this combo will give me approx the same performance as the recommended orbit motor on 4s.

Does anyone have and advice one this? Is there a disadvantage to running a 3s setup? Will this work? I'm also going to try to mill out a longer shaft so that I can put it right on the end of the boom as my TR shaft like the new JokerCam.

Thanks!

Brian

Is this heli sold and parts stocked in the US? I looked at the Joker-USA website and it hasn't been updated with the 3DD info..

This version of the Joker 3DD isn't the mainstream version. The mainstream version is the Joker 3 with DD... Basically its the Joker 3 main drive gear train with secondary stage and the tail drive motor similar to the one pictured above. I think it has to deal with parts compatibility...its just more economical to make mostly the same parts for 2 machines.

Regardless the 3DD in the picture flys great and is smooth and quiet. So you know these are actually rare machines...I only know of about 4 in the country...I have one of them.

I'm trying something a little new. I want to reduce the weight of the tail drive system...it's already pretty light but going with my new creation reduces the weight of the heli by about 105g. Instead of running the ESC and motor at the tail I am running a special harness from the back of the frame to the tail. I've seen long phase wires used before in much more expensive and higher power applications so I figure its ok for an RC heli.

Hopefully I get to try this setup out next week. IF it works Ill post a list of parts. All items Im using are off the shelf. The tail shaft is the stock tail shaft from the 3DD kit with 2 additional flats on it....very simple

Wow, beautiful work Carlo. Thanks for posting that video. It would be nice to see how the motor holds up with a stronger pack and ESC. Can't wait to hear how the setup holds in flight.

I haven't been flying much lately due to an exam and other things but I'm looking to get some flights in tomorrow.
