Hey guys, let's face it - that is a milestone for sure. Congratulations Raja for sticking with it.

I had a Raven 50 that has logged as many flights, and there is a fellow in the Century forum who has had 1700 flights now on his old inexpensive Hawk Sport!!!

I think, what such posts show, is that one does not have to always have the latest and greatest (or even the most expensive) to enjoy this hobby for many years. All he needs is a properly built, maintained and set-up heli.

And as parts wear, or are broken in a crash, they simply are replaced, as long as the manufacturer is still around and making parts for it. That is definitely important, as in my time, I have seen many models lose this type of parts support, from brands that are still here and from others that have closed shop.

And as motors or servos wear out, they too are simply replaced or overhauled. But they are all put back in the same airframe. Much the same as in full scale.

Of course, nobody would do so with any heli he did not like...be it a Hawk, Raven, Predator, Radikal, Spectra, X-Cell or whatever.

So go ahead and toot your own horn Raja, it is a milestone some get to and others don't for different reasons (that may not be negative). But I for one can see the pride in it.

I do have one question - do you count a flight as a complete tank of fuel burned or some other criteria that is more time oriented?

I ask because I do not count flights, but prefer to log flight time myself.

Phil

Thanks oldfart

Sorry for the delay in response guys, I was away in Maryland at the MHA funfly since Thursday, good times got to see alot of friends and meet new people as well as log 6 more hours of flying

To answer your question quick, each flight is on average 15 minutes or slightly more so I can keep the count fair. If for some reason I have to land early like 7 to 8 minutes I don't count it as a flight I go up again without refueling and then it counts. Basically its time related as complete tanks would take too long and with my helis after the 15 to 20 minutes max per flight there is about 1/4 tank left.

I added another 21 flights to my gassers this weekend and a couple more on other people's gassers that I was helping out with.

Raja, great pics, but it's June. You look like you were just released from solitary (or was the event waaaay earlier?). Where is your tan? SPF 50?

Typically on machinery you have hour meters that count off the run cycle. Using gallons consumed would be another good way to measure wear and tear. If you want to go crazy you would put a flow meter on board so you could measure work load. Higher flow rates would indicate greater load times which are the only real times that any wear is occurring on the power train. This is why the data collected on number of flights is only useful for the individual that flies them to determine PM schedules.

The servos and control links are seeing wear all the time whether the engine is heavily loaded or not.

I use one of these on my zero turn mower, generator, etc to keep track of hours for servicing. Since wear on heli really only happens when engine is running, then I think this would be the best indicator to go by. Simply ground it and wrap the black wire around spark plug wire and the timer activates whenever engine is running.

Hey Zman

Yeah I got one of those on my lawn mower too. Had it for some years as well. At one point it started to reset by itself and not reset when I push the button, but this year it seems to be counting and not resetting. Cool gadget, thought about getting ones for my gasser when I bought it for the mower, but then figured it would be just more weight to fly around with and risk of crash damage I just opted not to do it and just count flights instead. Counting gallons is not an option for me as there are many models and they all run on gas I'd have to get a seperate container for each if I did that...

Better mousetrap

Actually, this is what I would use. http://www.alliedelec.com/search/pr...spx?SKU=2070077 Very small, self contained, vibration activated hourmeter. I have similar in my real scale airplane, but it is hard wired. I just might replace it with this one to eliminate wiring. I spoke with Raja about putting it on his helicopters, but then we lost track of the idea plus Raja seems real happy with his row of counters...good enough.

There is always a gadget you can buy but if all you are interested in is time paper and pencil works good taking the flight time off your transmitter.
