I think it is good to keep a flying log. Yeah, its just a hobby with expensive toys to have fun with. Sure, but some of us tend to be more "scientific" about what we play with and that often leads to improvements in the game.
It is said, e.g., in Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" that expertise is truly gained only after thousands of hours of practicing the art. Raja has documented (not guessed) 1000 flights on one (of his many) models. If each flight averages 20 minutes, then that is over 300 hours of actual flying. Add to that the hours spent assembling, maintaining, and troubleshooting to support those actual flying hours and I bet he can actually lay claim to having several thousand hours of expertise. How many "years" you've been flying helis really says little about your expertise without knowing how much time you have actually flown.
I'm glad Raja admits to 1000 flights. It makes me feel a lot better knowing that I have no where near that time and that I need to pay my dues to fly like he does.

I might suggest that he certainly has a lot of experience with 2 helicopters, but that may not necessarily help when it comes to matters of OTHER helicopters.

What does Raja's 1000 flights count towards helping me with my GSR for instance? Nada. Zilch. A big fat nothing. It's great if you need help with a Spectra or the no longer sold 1005, but what does he know about my helicopter?

I´ll say Raja has helped me with his experience even if my helicopter is a Predator, many of the things translate from gasser to gasser, many don´t but I have taken what is useful to me reading his posts, and he has been very helpful with anyone asking for advice so I give this man credit for his sharing.
One more thing he has helped me with his posts is with the GV 1.

So, anyway, I say Congrats for your 1000 flights, it´s some flying.

4 years 8 months is about 240 weeks.

1000 flights / 240 weeks = about 4 flights per week.

Now granted there are some weeks in there that he could not have flown, so I would say 6 flights per week is probably closer to it.

That does not seem that monumental to me. I guess I am still not seeing why this is such a "milestone".

Question. Do you have 1000 flights on your present airframe? Do you have a heli that you've owned long enough to have 1000 flights on it? Now for me that's a milestone. I own 2 Spectra G's and I don't have 10 flights on the pair

I think Raja's point is not so much that he has logged over a thousand flights but more that its typical that once you properly setup an XCell airframe, they will run for years and many flights with minimal problems and maintenance (assuming you don't drive it into the ground).

His helicopters are documented proof of the durability of the models. In these times of disposable everything, you don't see that as much anymore.

plus, if you've ever seen Raja fly, you know that '1 flight' usually means the machine is airborne for, oh, about 45 minutes to an hour so we're talking *a lot* of flight time.

Congrats Raja.

Look guys. I am not denying that this "milestone" was accomplished with quite a bit of flying.

BUT..... it is conclusions such as this.....
I think Raja's point is not so much that he has logged over a thousand flights but more that its typical that once you properly setup an XCell airframe, they will run for years and many flights with minimal problems and maintenance (assuming you don't drive it into the ground).

.... that I do not agree with. And let me just make sure this is clear, I do not care which helicopter this is.

He has had multiple crashes over those 1000 flights. That tells us that there have been parts replaced over those flights and I would imagine quite a few of them. Helicopters crash hard. You end up replacing a lot on the airframe. So how does this speak of durability? How do we know that the parts that he had to replace in a crash wouldn't have worn out 100 flights later?

He stated this........
Crashes
I know this, I keep track! The answer is 10. Batting 100 flights per crash average
That to me is not out of the ordinary. I have had a number of helicopters that have gone 100-200 flights without incident. I flew a Knight 50 3D for almost 3 months without anything failing or crashes. I average 20 flights a week. How is this any different. In my eyes it is not.
Question. Do you have 1000 flights on your present airframe? Do you have a heli that you've owned long enough to have 1000 flights on it? Now for me that's a milestone. I own 2 Spectra G's and I don't have 10 flights on the pair
Again, as mentioned above, the Knight 50 3D probably has that and then some. I flew this particular helicopter for 2 years. Averaging 20 flights a week for probably 8 months out of those two years. You do the math. And that is just one instance. I have had a Hawk/Raven that I flew just as much before I got the Knight 50. Then there is a Blade 400 that I flew the crap out of.

My point is, yes 1000 flights is a lot to some, but to others it is not that much. Especially considering it was spread out of 4+ years.

You know something...

You Century pilots are a class act! When you guys get to a 1000 flights on your Radikals why don't you make a post about it. You can bet I won't be coming in there to nit picking everything you or anyone else says. Instead I'll be congratulating you on your accomplishment, seriously.

I'm happy I reached a 1000 flights, I cracked a Champagne bottle when I got to 2000 flights with the 1005, why can't you be happy for me?

P.S. If you want to calculate my flights per week, this might help as there is certainly more than just the Spectra and one gasser flight equals about 2 nitro flights so keep that in mind and that makes them slower to add up...

I do not know what else I can say to express that this is not a Century vs MA or any other helicopter vs any other helicopter. I have tried to get that point across in every post I have made, but for some reason you keep looking over it.

My first post was nothing more than asking for clarification and more information on the subject. Everyone else turned this into a heli and individual bashfest. Go back and re-read from the beginning. I was nothing more than curious as to what this meant to you and the terms of this "milestone". SOrry you all read more into it.

I don't have a 1000 flights on my spectra yet, but I slept in a Holiday Inn last night, does that count?

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

I hope my Spectra can get that many flights out of it. If you consider an initial investment of $3000, that amounts to $3 per flight plus gas.

Ok, I'm jealous. Where do you guys find all that time to fly? I have about 380 since I started logging almost 4 years ago. I get maybe 3 saturdays a month, with no more than 4 or 5 flights at the most. If our entire club shows then its 2-3 flighs and more BS than stick time. As far as crashes I just wish that Futaba would include a reset button.
