my first inclination after the first one was "sabotage" to further the whole clean energy crap they're pushing down out throats. A second explosion only proves to me I was right. One??? Maybe. Two back to back??? I call bull$hit.

Also, this just proves even further why we need to drill on land rather than deep sea.

350 feet is hardly deep sea. Also this is a production platform so there is lesss worry for subsea leaks similar to the horizon leak.

I'll go re-read it. I thought it said 3,500 ft. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against drilling offshore, I just think we should be drilling on land too. We have a ton of onshore oil we should be pumping. Plus any land based accidents I would think, would be easier to contain and clean up. First thing we need to do is build some new, modern refineries.

EDIT: you were right, 340 water depth.

The problem with onshore drilling is that nobody wants a 180 ft derrick in their back yards. They don't want smelly refineries in their back yards either. Shallow water was banned by congress and drilling was pushed to deeper water. So you can see the dilemma here, no senator is going to stick his neck on a political block to get more drilling on land opened up or in deep water in the gulf. Several large drilling rigs have already left the gulf to go overseas. The problem here is that they will be on multiple year contracts and will not be returning any time soon. So the 6 month moratorium has really turned into a several year moratorium.

Hmmm, I wonder if fuel prices will go up if we have to depend on sourcing our petroleum products from the wells that the rigs drill overseas?

Thanks Rappy 60 . I was sure deep water drilling was a complicated process, but finally some good drawings showing what the heck is going on.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

Yes a very interesting read. Basically the rig crew is mainly at fault for not recognizing a flowing well for 4 hours, although they were certainly pressed by both Transocean and BP. Not to say that any one action was the reason for the accident, there certainly was a chain of events (no dual barrier, no top-bottom circulation, failure to wait for the cement to cure) that could of been broken. Both certainly did not follow the dual barrier rule. The interesting thing for me was that they convinced themselves that the well wasn't flowing, even though they had irregularities during the tests.
