Guys have mentioned bladders and we all know that won't work because of the pressure at those depths.
actualy there are ways to do that. you can switch to a different relative pressure by putting the pump on the bottom of the ocean, might only need 30 PSI or so pumping water into the bladder, not thousands of PSI.

Another way would be to use water in the blader and in the tube to the surface instead of pumping air from the surface. if it is the same denisity as the salt water it takes the relative presure out of the equation as well. Use higher density fluid in the tube and you don't even need a pump. You might even have to chose the fluid carefully, more than a tiny bit higher density fluid in the tube added up over a mile of columb pressure height could easily burst just about any bladder.

I don't think that will work. After all, Obama has been in charge since day one. You would have to stand in line to ask his permission.

From all the pictures I've seen we have about 3 dead fish, one dirty bird, and some oil in the grass....looks more like my back yard than an epic disaster.

And isn't it funny how all the pictures I've seen are taken at such an angle so that it will look like a bigger problem than it is. Fact is, most of the oil at this point has disapated or evaporated. These media dorks even tried to say that the oil was "in plumes under the the surface" since there wasn't enough on the surface to take pictures of, they are having to invent phantom oil now.
You're not getting the whole truth about what's going on. The media can't get close enough to photograph everything. Even if they could get close to the affected area since when did the media become a reliable source of truthful information?

OMG

O my god! I can not believe these procedures that BP is going with. What a bunch of ASSHOLES. And i mean that with the upmost respect to the guys just following orders. Its not there fault. But BP has got to be the most DumbAss Company in the World.
I cannot believe that there trying to cut the pipe a few inches above the flange. This is just STUPID. From the bend in the riser you can see that it is no longer round. Even from where there cutting. The mating part would have to be measured and formed in a oblong or egged shape to match. Most anyone can tell you that this will not work. Ask a plumber. OMG IDIOTS!!!

There is only two way to do it right.

First___( The best solution) they should of just crimped the riser. They only have a mile long pipe to experiment with. And just wait till the relief wells are done and deal with the media.

Second___ If there going to take the risk, just cut the damn bolts off one at a time from the flange and use a heavy C clamp for each bolt till all removed. After the nuts are cut off they could used pliers to remove the bolts. Something like what we use to pop off linkages on our helis. Or clamp a hydraulic hammer to the flange to peen out the bolts. Then replace with new bolts that have a fine wire cable inserted at the end then up through the bottom flange through the top flange ( to help draw the new top flange "riser" )followed by a nut.
And now that they fu$ked up AGAIN, it will be hard to get a visual on the task at hand. Feeding the monster. Way to Go BP. Just another screwup from your over educated and underpayed bigwigs...

I swear... A caveman could do it... Like the sign says_ BP SUCKS

Yea, you would think in 30 years and untold billions, they could hire someone to design a blowout preventer that actually does what it is supposed to do.

Looks like the BP Brain Trust is sitting on the pot today.

I wonder if they will try and jam up a new set of diamond blades under the weight of the pipe. Or maybe they will just move the pipe back and forward till it breaks off.

Exactly my point. No matter how bad it is. The media will try and make more out of it. Right now there is a suspension on drilling in the gulf all together. MMS is running around driving everyone in production nuts so they can look like they're doing something in front of the cameras.

What's going to be really crappy about all this, is a year from now when the litigation finally starts to hit the courts, all the documentation will come up and show that MMS signed off on all the work that was done on that platform. But you won't hear about it then because that's just boring courtroom stuff. But pictures of a few tar balls in the sand? Now that's news.

It's pretty easy to be a critic from the barko lounger.

1st: Imagine trying to assemble a T 450 only using your toes and a pair of hemostat's with a pair of 2 D glasses. Then to add -they, are out of your focus range and you can't see because of the mud and product.

Then get the parts oscillating due to current's and the movement of the cable's. Of course you have 10 guy's leaning over your shoulder coaching. Just hope they got you plugged directly into
the instant coffee and a taping your smokes end to end for you !

Most likely it's no ordinary common schedule 80 stuff either.
Flange and neck material is probably a cast nickel / inconel alloy stubbed onto a very heavy wall pipe with a wall which could be greater than 3".

Now were gona add the coup de- grace: Inside that mess you have the drill pipe - who know's what the end of it is composed of ! With the luck their having it's probably sintered M-42 cobalt !!!

I watched the initial cuts and the material just laughed at the carbide before it hogged up. Pretty slim they can shear - it - without exploding the jaw's on the shear.

What is starting to T me off is I believe they are selectively controlling the vid feed available to the public so either you get to watch what they want you too or nothing at all.

Sad part is there's a lot of first hand - knowledge watching them make inexperienced error's.

My solution : If they can get high pressure air to it and current , fixture a track ring onto the flange and start nibbling with a plasma.

It's gona get a bit ugley - it can be done - if they think out of the box.

Live ROV Feeds

Not sure if anyone cares but heres a page with all the live feeds coming from the ROV's down there.

IE and Chrome
http://bp.isevil.org/

Firefox
http://bp.isevil.org/vlc.php

Uses windows media player (IE, Chrome) or VLC (Firefox).

The VLC page viewed in Firefox looks to be the best. Install Firefox, then VLC media player and make sure to check the 'Mozilla Plugin' checkbox. Voila!!

Been watching the last attempt and wow thats a lot of oil coming out now. Much worse than before.

P.S. They are called...BarcaLoungers for the sake of Pete, 'Grayeegel'!

Thanks for this thread. Good info and ideas here. If they ever get the pipe cut cleanly I wonder if the drill pipe is going to come shooting out making a bigger mess and letting the oil spew out faster.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

Good News

They was able to shear the pipe off just abouve the flange. Looks rough but now all the flange bolts are unrestricted with a good view and the bop is in one piece. YEAaaa!

I just hope they replace the top flange with a new riser and not try to use a bigger pipe over it with a muffler clamp.

might only need 30 PSI or so pumping water into the bladder, not thousands of PSI.
30 psi will not do anything, first you have to overcome 2200 psi of water pressure at the bottom of the ocean before you can pump up anything..
