This is rapidly becoming one of my favorite threads.

I'm frequently (and joyfully) surrounded by full-size heli arrivals and departures at the rate of 15-20 per hour. Most are Eurocopter AS350's (open tailrotors) and EC130's (fenestron tailrotors) -- with the occasional Bell Jetranger (open tailrotor) thrown in for good measure. I'm always surprised by how much quieter the fenestron birds are -- although there's a trade-off in yaw authority.

In such an environment it's quickly obvious that the loudest component on turbine-powered helis is the tailrotor -- above even engine sounds.

Why do you suppose we don't see more like the MD520's NOTAR (ducted anti-torque) design? I could've sworn their yaw authority was excellent. No?

Some real nice pics - thanks for sharing.

I really like the pair of black helis with the simple white squiggle down the side. The one where the squiggle follows into the tail standoff is pretty slick, too.

That hound's tooth R44 has gotta go, though.

Subscribed. Some really great paint jobs in here.

+1 on the squiggly line following all the way to tail standoff.

Do R44 owners intentionally try to come up with the most awful schemes imaginable? Maybe it makes them easier to see?

I'd take the squares over the pinstripe rainbow.

I don't remember a thing about Riptide other than the heli.

I agree with the guy who asked about R44 schemes. I dont think I've seen many that really seemed to work. Maybe it's the lines and limited area that makes it so difficult.
