So I was reading the book on both and the OS for my pumped version says the mid should be set to one half turn from closed, while the align says 2 turns for closed? they are the same carbs and pretty much the same motor. Should I set the mid to a half turn from closed on both that seems closer than 2 turns? They both say 2 turns from closed for high.

The difference is the OS is pumped
The setting will be different with the pumped motor than the non pumped one. The pump is driving the fuel to the carb harder so the settings will be closed down more.

Fenderbean,

I think the Align manual is more updated.... I have read the OS version of the manual back when the 91HZ was initially released..... If you continue reading the OS manual on the initial tuning sections..... There's an entry which goes something like, "Now that high needle and idle mixture is properly set, is the only time you should make an adjustment on the mid needle which was previously set to 2 turns(I don't remember exactly if 2 or 1 1/2) out from fully close"...... But, that time my buddy and I, just set it to 2 out..... And lean it few clicks, so we could build up head speed....

It's your choice however you want to set your needles at....

On my 91hz align, current needle setting, is 1 1/2 + 6 clicks for high, and 1 1/2 + 8 click on the mid..... And that's where the best power setting currently currently on my engine, until the weather changes again.... Going a click richer or leaner, it looses power....

What I'm saying is, 1/2 turn open from fully close, I'm positive is too lean, based on my needle setting on my engine.... And I only run 15% Rotorage..... I'm guessing you'll be running 30% nitro like majority does..... Have fun.....

Here in the UK the air is dense so it is normal to richen the mixture a bit. I started my Align 91H for the first time yesterday. I have main 2 turns, mid 1 1/2 turns and I had to richen the bottom as it was lean and overunning when I shut it down to a tickover.

The Align book does state 2 turns for high and mid needles and then add another 1/2 for the break in but it doesn't state which needle.

T-Rex 700 with collective at +/-11 and cyclic at about 7. This setup is working really well and the model is flying nicely.

I heard a number of times that the OS manual needed correction on that.

Regardless, You should ALWAYS start rich and slowly lean your way into the correct setting. With a new engine, is a one way trip with NO return if you start lean and try to work your way back.

I am only quoting from the manual. But as I say mine is a new engine and it is running well on rapicon 20% with the main at 2, mid 1 1/2 and mixture a bit richer than factory.

Just for anyones info, I FINALLY got my Align .91HZ tuned in today using 1 shim on 30% magnum. I have burn over 2 gallons and working off the factory manual of 2 turns for both needles and flying at 2100ft and 105 degrees was WAY to rich, was really dissapointing me and almost caused crashes a few times when the head bogged down extremely. I had gotten down to almost 1 turn on the mid and 1.5 on the high and it was still too rich. I just said screw it today and went .5 on the mid and 1.25 on the high. Oh beezezers, power up the waaaaaazooooo! Had a fricken blast, engine sounds happy as a clam on a few flights so far, glow plug looks excellent.
