As a youngster, I have vivid memories of seeing these magnificent machines around Dorset, with their 2 dirty great exhaust ports accompanied with a menacing grin at the front. For a while now, I've been contemplating building a scale turbine and this Westland Wessex fits the bill perfectly.
I am just realising that one of the attractions of turbine helis is the dual exhaust ports on the turbine unit, and it's significance with respect to the exhaust ports of the Wessex.
Does anyone know of suitable suitable mechanics and airframe or am I looking at a scratch build ?

The guy we rented hanger space had one of these except it had a radial engine, could fly 16 people in it's configuration but was rated experimental. They are huge magnificent aircraft! Sorry i don't have any info for ya, but i see them in posts from time to time, but never even close as realistic as the real thing. Think most of the ones i see are home made. The pilot sits over the engine and it accessede from the front like a car, that sure seems like a tall bill to fill with something currently out there. If i run across any posts of it, i'll bring them to your attention

Growing up here in the US during the 70's and 80's, it reminds me of the A-Team tv show. Los Angeles County Sherriff still uses these today. I see them on the news all the time

Will ride this one out with ya to see where it goes. Subscribed

There she is. Looks like the head is far enough back to fit most mechanics.

Flyer, do you know what year they went from radial internal combustion to turbine? Just curious, 1958 seems old enough to have a radial, but might be wrong

The gazzele engine WAS a turbine and was installed first in 1956 as the radial was deemed ..rubish

Ah, thanks. You should have heard it fire up. Boom, rattle rattle, boom, smoke everywhere, it was awesome. The motor had to be 10 foot in diameter, biggest motor i've ever seen.

bellbloke

Who used to be on these forums built one of these using the skyfox mechanics, he was gonna convert it to electric but decided to go for a radial engine which he is in the process of doing

Yug:

I second what Boyd said. I would love to see Bell Bloke back on here. I enjoyed all of his helis and posts. Infact, he was the one that got me into converting almost all of my helis to electric after his Lama project. Tell him to come on back

Cheers

Richard

Is it just me, I thought all Helicopters flew in 3D......Hmmmm?
