after 1 hour on charger the radio works fine and has 10.2 volts so it must have a safety protect feature

If you had a Lipo in it then you would have needed a new battery, but Nimh come back even after fully uncharged.

It will shut itself down. But as Steph said, not in time to save a lipo.

I dont think it fully discharges, I think it turns itself off at 9 volts

There is no low voltage cutoff on a 9303.

Odd thing about batteries. They have pretty much a flat discharge curve over most of their useful charge. But when you reach the end -- where they're pretty much used up, the individual cell voltages drop to zero under load quickly.

Let the dead cells rest awhile, you'll measure a respectable voltage, but if you put any kind of load on them, poof, they drop precipitously fast again.

If the cells are healthy, stuff some charge back into them, they come back up to their nominal voltage quickly.

An older pack, well you may not be able to get away with treating them like that.

Why not put an auto shutdown feature in the radio? They already put a warning alarm to let you know they're getting low when you're using it. The alarm gives you ample time to shut things down and land.

Now suppose there was an auto shutoff feature, and for whatever reason, it decided the batteries were done while you were still in the air...

There IS some minimum voltage below which the 9303 gives up the ghost, but it's not a built-in feature, it's just some point where the logic in the radio no longer functions as it should.

And yes, it will kill a LiPo. Not because it sucks the battery down to 9 volts (presumably still the drop-dead point for a 3-cell pack), but because it will continue to discharge the batteries down to a point where they are way below 9 volts, until the battery voltage reaches that magic point where the electronics simply says bye bye.
