Yes, you need to step down the voltage. It might run a little while on 6v, but it will not have a long life.

I think that BLS251's restriction to 4.8V rather means
"no more than four NiCd or NiMH cells".

If Futaba would say 6V is OK, then folks would start to use
five cells - but that would mean thet the actual voltage
could be close to almost 7V for a freshly-charged 5-cell pack.

It seems to me that regulated 6V would be just fine, but I doubt
if this would produce any significantly better performance over 4-cell
NiCd or regulated 5.1 to 5.5V. Maybe just wiring would be simpler..

Myself I am happy with GY520 + BLS251, with a good 4-cell NiCd
battery - or with a 2S LiPo with a 5.3V regulator for the BLS251S.

It runs fine at 5.3 but will burn out at 6 volts ? Thats not even a volt diference .

Maybe we should install surge protectors as well

What happens when your stepdown breaks from vibs or bending the diode to many times ?

About 9 months ago I called futaba, the gent said if he bls251 is ran at 6volts "regulated" it is perfectly fine. The 4.8 rating is based on the old 4-5 nicad gig that's all it's about...

I got a funny story about calling futaba . I called them about running 8 volts on a 617 fasst rx along with my 451 bls servos . The guy had no idea why I even wanted to do that . He tried very hard to discourage me .
Maybe I should call him back and tell him I did it anyway and has been fine for over a year now .

..Yes but, if you have any failure next months don't ask futaba's the change or help about this. Manufacturer knows better than you the reason who don't recomend power more than 6V.
