They seem pretty cheap at Hobbycity, and I now you get what you pay for, but are they worth the small bucks for a beater heli?

I was particularly interested in the metal 500.

Thanks.

It's easy to find an excuse to do wrong. Hard is not to find an excuse to do right.

I think you'll get strong opinions on this one from both sides. Yes, they are dirt cheap. I've never flown one, don't think I'd buy a kit from them. I do however love their cheap lipos.

I was considering getting the HK500GT as well. I did some research looking for reviews and post to see what the “word on the street” was. Everyone seems happy with it. The one thing they are swapping out is the tail rotor grips. They say the stock grips don’t have thrust bearings so they are replacing them with Trex 500 grips and bearings. I haven’t bought one myself yet so I can’t confirm this. I’m waiting for the HK 600!

I bought one after seeing another fly at the field. At the price you pay, I don't see how you can go wrong. You might need to replace the gear that the belt goes around as some have had the shaft spin inside the gear, but that is a cheap part.
I've been flying it now for a couple of months and I'm amazed at how stable this is. I have not flown any other 450 helis, but do have 50 size nitro. I hardly fly those anymore as I'm having too much fun with the HK 450. I'm using the recommended $3.65 servos also. They work great so far.

One of the first tings that went wrong with my Trex 450sa was the tail drive gear spinning on the shaft.Of course that was after a crash. So u have to have a spare drive gear on hand anyway! Clone or not. Dave

Was just on HK looking at the kit prices, insane. I'm surprised there aren't forums here on RR about these clones. I might just build one with all cheap servos, everything knockoff, for the fun of it.

I agree, but the lipos I've bought from them are outstanding, I can't see why the kits wouldn't be great.

I have to admit, I bought one! Not here yet but I have mixed feelings about it.

I know, I'll probably have what I've paid for... but for that price, even as a shelf decoration it would be cool

i saw the built up mechanics of the hk500gt recently without any electronics installed and was surprised as it looked pretty good sitting on the bench for a $70 kit.

I got the HK500 @ $55 before the GT version and I have to say it flys superbly for the price. I'm running HS-82MG and a 9254 rudder with a 5S battery which needs a 15 pinion. Here is a video of the setup and I'll have a flight video up soon.

Absolutely, if you look on the hobbyking site, a majority of the spare parts are actually Trex Align manufactured.

I don't know about HK other than this kit and what others said above about their other products.

Don't know if I can show this but

I went to http://www.xheli.com and look half way down the page and they have a real nice T500 clone called the EXI500 carbon heli with metal tail housing and metal boom block on it and everything is metal headed with CARBON frames and 100% compatible parts change with the T500 for $139 and so far they look great and they have blades for them on there like yellow/black rotortechs for $40 and replacement canopies for $12 fiberglass of course and seems that the part prices are cheaper than Trex's carbon frame set for $29. The other ones you are talking about are metal heads and metal frames bit with plastic tails and boom blocks all are belt drive so I thought with all metal shouldn't have any of the static problems like the carbon and belt versions of the Trex500.
Also the same with the T450 on there too I see. I'm not associated with them just saw an add in a magazine so checked it out as I wanted a spare T500 backup HK still has the best battery prices. This place is in LA, California so shipping was quick to the east coast here.
