A friend and I have recenty bought Trex 700Ns and need to setup the OS91 engines. We have previously gone off the finger on the backplate and sound to gauge performance.

In order to bring in a little more science we are thinking of buying a tacho and maybe a IR temp gauge.

I've never tached a heli before (Many planes though) so I was looking at the Skytach as it looks like you can use it remote from the heli and when it is flying. In theory this seems good. Any thoughts on this product or heli tachos in general please.

I think the IR temp gauge should be a simple thing to select but any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I'm hoping for a max headspeed of 1950 although I would imagine my preference is nearer 1850.

Thanks

Geoff

I think optical tacs are great and they are not a tool I wouldn't be without in my field box. Works with a variable shutter (wheel) that gives the illusion the blades are frozen as the shutter is spinning at a relative rpm in relation to your rotor head. You do need another person as you can't tach it and fly at the same time (least I cannot) - but it's great for setting up your curves if your not already using a governor or checking if you are.

The IR temp sensor is OK I guess but mine stays in the toolbox and I do the finger on the backplate thing - seems to work fine and haven't ruined an engine yet anyway.
