My 700 has been going really well. Last time out I noticed that the clutch seemed to be grabbing when cranking the engine with the dynatron - so much so that the engine had difficulty starting. When it did start the blades really wanted to turn even at idle. I stopped it and later pulled the engine out to see what was wrong. All looked ok so I put it back in . Spinnig the main gear, the cluch bell spins really freely - but when I cranked it again the blades were trying to turn again. Whats going on!!!! It used to idle quite happily with the blades stationary. Do I need a new clutch????

I really hope some one can solve this for me

Sounds like the clutch is about to break to me.
Weak shoe pivot point.
It usually gives this symptom shortly before it breaks.

I would fit a new clutch, preferably the QuickUK unit.

Don't even think about it. Install a new clutch, and be done with it.

Don't use another align clutch, put the QuickUK heavy Duty clutch and be done with it. I had the same thing happen, the clutch never broke, but if you take it out you might find a very fine stress crack that's allowing your clutch shoe to engage prematurely.

Remove stock one and use HD Quick UK one.

I noticed mine doing this very thing after a flight one afternoon, so I removed it and could easily see the stress fracture on the stock unit.

Double check your clutch liner. If the gap is too big between the clutch liner and the clutch it will do this no matter what clutch you put in.

IMO the reason the QUK clutch 'fixes' the problem is because it's slightly larger diameter to make up for the too large gap align produces with the bell. Reline the clutch bell and get the gap tighter and I'll be the stock $20 clutch will last a long time.

Due to the cost and hassle of getting a Quick UK clutch to New Zealand form overseas I decided to order a stock unit locally but it sounds as if I also need to order a new liner. Question - will a new liner make the gap snugger or will I need to pack it out somehow or should I order some thing like a raptor liner which maybe alittle thicker. How do you get the old liner out - just tear it out or can you dissolve the glue. I've read that you reglue with epoxy - true?? Any advice appreciated Ross

Here is a writeup on how to replace the liner

http://www.raptortechnique.com/repair_liner.htm

I can usually get most of the liner out with a hobby knife with a fresh blade. I've also used the sanding wheel on a Dremel.

I don't know if the Raptor liner is thicker or not. If you can get a chunk of the liner out and measure it you can compare it to the Raptor 90 clutch liner. for thickness.

Before you start measure the diameter of your clutch and of your clutch bell.

Here are a few conversations that can help out a lot also

I just measured a new Raptor-90 liner (part# PV0324) - I got 1.2mm so you can compare that to the stock Align liner. I don't have a free one to measure.
