I have a new Trex 500 ESP and a GY520 and I see there are some choices in mounting using 2mm or 3mm pads and a metal shim for electrical issues..

How are you Trex 500 flyers mounting your gyro?

I'm assuming on the tail boom mount, what pads and or metal shims are you using?

3mm pad, or 2mm pad between gyro and metal plate, and 3mm pad between metal plate and helicopter!

I might be in the minority here, but Zeal tape is awful, it's like putting your gyro on jello. Sucks. I've used the below tape on all my helis, 2 layers, no metal pads.

This reminds me my mechanics course at the university... ;-)

Gyro mounted on different thickness tapes will have varying
resonance frequency, plus the metal plate between foam tapes
acts as a tuned mass damper to decrease the gyro vibration
amplitude and further alter it's resonance frequency.

All that is to minimize the vibrations transferred from the chassis
to the gyro, otherwise gyro stability will suffer ( drift, kicking etc ).

Without going to too much theory, there is no simple answer
which tape to use and if the plate is needed. Just experiment
with one 2mm tape, if the tail is drifting or kicking,
go to 3mm tape, then two 2 mm tapes with plate in between,
then two 3 mm etc. Whichever produces the most stable tail
and has effective tail hold, that's the setting to use.
