I'm new to the sport but I have a (probably dumb) question. I thought a BEC (battery eliminating circuit) was used to get rid of having a separate receiver battery in addition to the main battery. If that is so, then why does the Align Trex 600 ESP kit come with a BEC and a 1800mah receiver battery?

Most likely that BEC can't handle the voltage you flight pack will put out.

No BEC on the ALIGN ESC

Your understanding is correct, a BEC is used to step the voltage down from a higher voltage flight pack in order to be able to run the receiver from the same battery.

In this case the ESC provided with the 600ESP does not have a built in BEC so you need to run a separate RX battery pack. The 600ESP is supplied with a 7.2 V LiPo battery to be used for the receiver, but in order to get it to the proper voltage you need a BEC to step the voltage down for the RX.

Alternatively you could go aftermarket for a high voltage ESC that has a BEC built in, and thus eliminate the separate battery and separate BEC provided with the kit. For most users starting off though, the stock ALIGN setup is more than fine.

Hope this helps...

Cheers;
Eric

Although it is a pain to have to charge two batteries for the bird, I love my 600esp. By having two batteries, I know that the main battery will be giving full juice to the motor rather than having to power the servos as well.

It's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

The 600 ESP comes with a Voltage Regulator and the 1800 Lipo pack. The regultor steps the voltage from 7.4 volts to 5.8. What you bought is a BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) BEC's are meant to run off the flight pack, while regulators are meant to run off a seperate lipo pack. It is up to you which direction you take either will work. Just make sure your BEC can handle a 22.2 volt input and can put out at least 5-6 amps.
