My only point is, there is no legal right for me to get out of your way, as long as i am doing the limit. It may be poor driving, but the aspect that people have adopted of having to, burns my a$$. Your reference of "fast lane" proves the point. There is no fast or slow lane. When i got my commercial, they were called thru or travel lane and merge lane.
Your states driving booklet disagrees, it specifically calls it a lane for faster traffic, doesn't mention anything about how fast you are going, just calls it faster traffic. If you're going 65 and a car coming up on you is going 70 and there is no traffic on your right hand side, you are in the wrong lane, he is faster traffic. Not sure I can put it any more elementary for you to understand.

I guess if your ok with being a poor driver (your own words) there's nothing that can be done.

I think we definitly have identified some "Left Lane Campers" here.

This is a link to your state law on the subject:

The funny part is these few tools that keep saying "you wanna speed go ahead," are also breaking the law. I guess it's a case of "the law you're breaking is worse than the law I'm breaking."

It really comes down to common courtesy

If you are in the left lane, and someone is coming up on you (it may be speeding in your opinion but 5mph over is not really that bad) What is the harm of moving out of their way so that they may pass safely???? Yes they can pass you on the right BUT what if you are in the left lane and someone is going UNDER the speed limit by 5mph? Do you do the illegal thing and pasds them on the right or do you slow down to accomodate their "I deserve to be in this lane" attitude?
IMO If you are slower than the traffic behind you, move over. It is not yopur place to police the roads, that is what law enforcement is for.
One day the life you save may be your own (You got out of the way before the idiot doing 100mph slammed in the rear of your car. In the Firefighting/EMS business for a few years now and I HAVE seen that ).............Ron

A long open highway in Idaho with someone camping out in the left is one thing
This is not a long lonely highway I commute on. It is a very dangerous, highly trafficked highway where everyone is trying to get from Sandpoint to Couer D' Alene as fast as possible. It is 40 miles of shear stupidity, mostly 2 lanes with some 4 lanes sections. There is a fatal or near fatal accident almost every month, and injury accidents weekly on it. You know why? It's because 65 mph isn't fast enough.

This highway (hwy 95) is littered with blind curves, moose, elk, deer, dogs, and left turning cars that all spring up on you if you are driving too fast or not paying attention. You have people passing in no passing zones, causing oncoming traffic to slam on their brakes or worse. We just had a Camaro with an idiot texting drift head on into a van, causing three vehicles to get totaled. I hear the sirens from my house roughly 2-3 times a week. So yeah, slow the hell down you idiots, Wal-Mart will still be there, I promise.

What makes it even more exciting is you have people who pass you on the left as you are trying to turn left off of the 2 lane highway. Yes, it has happened to me. I have to turn left off of the highway to get onto the road to my house, I always put the turn signal on well back and tap the brakes to let the people behind me know whats about to happen. Sure as ****, some impatient twat jumps out and passes me on the left, in the oncoming lane of travel just as I was starting to turn left. He barely missed me. That is what I am talking about when I refer to dumb**** speeders. Yes, I agree that you should stay in the right lane unless passing, but nowhere in any law of any state does it say that you have to yield to a vehicle exceeding the speed limit or flow of traffic.

The comment about prudent and safe, that is not a substitute for the posted speed limit. What it means is that the flow of traffic should be maintained within reason. If the posted speed limit is 65 and everyone is going 70, that is reasonable. If the posted speed limit is 65 and everybody is going 80, that is not reasonable, and you can still receive a ticket for speeding if you are one of the unlucky ones.

And yes, it is illegal to stay in the left lane unless passing or turning. Different states have different variations on the law, but the law does not mean you have to pull over for a speeder if you are still passing traffic that is going below the speed limit. You also are not supposed to exceed the speed limit in order to pass. If the majority of the flow is going the speed limit and you feel the need to speed, it's on you when you enter that passing lane and get nailed.

It's also not against the law to go below the speed limit unless it is so slow that it will impede traffic in an unsafe way. Most states have laws that state if you cannot go above 35 or 45 mph on the highway (different states have different speeds), you must pull over if you have three or more vehicles behind you. If you are going 55 in a 65, you are the only person on the road, and someone going 70 comes up behind you, he has to deal with it until there is a safe place to pass. You are not breaking the law.

As far as three cars abreast, all going the same speed, I always heard that called a Mexican Road Block.

let me tell you about an idiot that almost caused me and my family our lives
i was going home from a long days work not much traffic but i was passing a semi all of a sudden some idiot runs up on my bumper and starts flashing his lights
keep in mind we were going down hill so the semi pics up speed to get up the next hill
i maintain my speed knowing i will get passed him on the upcomeing hill
in the mean time the idiot behind me gets closer still flashing his lights
well im not going to speed up to way over the speed linilt just to let him pass just because he is in a hurry to get whereever itis he is going
anyway i barely get passed the truck turn on my turn signal to get over
the idiot behind me speeds to the right lane and passes me then gets right in front of me and slams on his brakes
well i hit my brakes and then he goes about 100 feet or so and slams on his brakes again (by this time i am in the right lane and my wife is franticly on the phone with 911 )
well he does it a third time and i told everyone to hold on because theres goona be a crash ) i was in a ford full size van and he was in a small compact car
not only did he indanger me my family but the truck driver and other drives behind us
what was so important that he had to get to 1 min sooner then anyone else
well when the hwy patrol finally stopped him i was right hehind the one that pulled him over (didnt notice the one that pulled behind me also)
just as i got out the officer behind me was standing there knowing i wanted a few mins with the idiot
i begged for the chance to just have a little conversation with this ummm person just five mins is all i asked but they wouldnt let me
anyway next time your in a hurry think about who is in the car in front of you holding you up by a fews seconds of your day because once things go wrong there is no bringing back a life you may very well taken by your impatients
the other driver got charged with wreckless op and was just in a hurry to get home from a bad day at work

There is a very fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness.'

Do you guys read the posts before you respond? No one is saying people have the right to run up your as$ flashing their high beams. No one here is saying they want to go 90mph down the highway and you should get out of the way.

People are saying if you aren't passing someone, move over. If the speed limit is 65 and you're going 55 passing people, more power to ya.

If the speed limit is 65 and the guy behind you is going 70, and you aren't passing anyone, move over, it's not your place to police the roads. There's 3 very easy reasons for this. Number one, it doesn't matter how fast you're going, the left lane is meant for passing. Some of you should spend a second and read your state's laws that were posted a couple posts up. By not moving over you are doing the same thing the speeders are doing, BEAKING THE LAW! This has nothing to do with speed.

Number 2, you are making the roads safer by moving over. Like it or not there will be idiots who start swerving all over the place and will cause an accident. If you're not passing anyone why not just let this guy by so he doesn't cause an accident? The road isn't a place to flex your muscles. This goes for the "I have just as much of a right to be here" crowd.

Number 3, you're most likely holding up traffic. It's the most frustrating thing ever when there's barely any cars on the road and you have one idiot up front sitting in the lane with a line of 20 cars behind him. I guess he's doing the right thing and the other 20 people are the idots, right?

If your in the left lane doing the speed limit on the Eway with noone in front of you and 2-3 cars behind you,get your dumb@$$ over.Ive seen people get cut off,run off the road ect.. for riding in the left lane and thats good for them. What I love doing is i'll get infront of them and slow down to 50 mph as I show them the bird .Its called the fast lane so if you wanna drive slow i'll help ya.90% of the people around here are smart enough to move over when they see someone comming up and thats how its suppose to be.I do 5-10 mph over the speed limit all the time on the Eway and 5 over on the main roads with no points on my DL .

I dont know if has been mentioned yet, but is proper to be in the right lane unless passing. Look up the autobahn you will get a ticket if you you are in the left lane and are not passing someone. traffic flows so much smoother this way.

You know what gets me? When I move out of the way to let the guy behind me pass, he just sits there and maybe speeds up a half a mph, then backs off. That happens so much in Minnesota that now I just sit there and block them, F em. I have no problem getting out the way for someone to pass, I don't judge them for going fast, maybe they have to take a dump really really bad or something. It's these pricks that just have to be out front like their leading the fricking pack or something, once they get up their they back off. Cruise control is practically useless, you can never set it and leave it because the prick that had to pass you keeps slowing down.

If your going to lead then lead, if you decide your going to pass someone doing 65 that means you cannot drop below 65 FOR NO F ING REASON.

Lets say the speed limit is 70, that means the majority of the cars are doing 75ish, if your in this group quit passing people in that group FOR NO REASON, its not going to hurt you to back off or speed up 1 MPH, go with the flow. Let the speeders go by and don't slow up for the slow guys as best you can, keep the flow going, keep the flow going.

Sorry but this subject really pisses me off.

Heres another good one.Your the only car on the main road (2 lanes) and some retart in there BMW,Caddy ect... comes flying up on your bumper. They could go around you in the next lane but stay there for a 1/2 mile.I allways give them that 1/2 mile to get off my azz and if not,I flip my turn single on and jam the breaks at the same time as soon as I see a street to turn on .The look on there face is priceless as you look in the rearview to see them locking there breaks up LOL .

Right lane left lane
Humbug

I have a name for slower cars ahead of me failing to yield.
"The Chicane"
Just drive around them like you would a traffic island.
Dont bother with the horn, light, or the fingers just concentrate on driving.

I drive a diesel that i have done quite a bit of motor work too so when people are on my tail i just flip a switch and let those big injectors flow so much diesel that when i look back there is just a huge black cloud and nothing else is visible. it is a guarantee that whoever was on my tail has backed off and usually stay away. I also have had the guys that will speed up in the right lane and try to cut in front to get around a semi or slower car and i will speed up and block them the when i am right at their window i give them the good old middle finger and let the smoke roll. it puts a big smile on my face every time.

It's funny, if we bump into someone on the sidewalk most of the time we use the word sorry, on the roads it's a big war.

This is my friend's way when dealing with that.
When you're driving and you know someone is about to come around you to give you the finger, just put your finger in your nose or pretend and look at that person as if you didn't know what happened, It works.
