Hi Guys,

I'm getting back into this hobby with the goal of competing starting at the AMA Class I level. I plan on using a T-Rex 600E to start with, I'll be using a CC 85HV which a Scorpion motor. I plan on following a guide I read on http://www.rcprecisionheli.com/ to help get the 600 setup, but still trying to get some info on the following:

10S or 12S? Most the info I found was really related to 3D flying. What kind of battery capacity will I need to get through the entire routine? Would a 12S 3000mah pack be enough? Will AMA even allow 12S yet or should I plan on 10S for now?

Anyone else running a 600-size electric for F3C?

Sorry if this info has already been posted, but I searched and was unable to find it.

Thanks!

I have seen a few folks compete in Class I with just a 6S 5000 pack setup. But, if you want, 8S 4000 or 10S 3000 would do it. Just run the numbers through a calc program. 10S is a lot of battery to lug around, though. The Class I manuevers are not power intensive whatsoever.

Shoot me an PM and we can get together (I'm in Franklin).

I'll be happy to work with you as soon as it gets above freezing.

ErichF,

Thanks for responding, I've read a lot of your posts on here and appreciate your input.

I guess I was thinking of the higher efficiencies with going with a HV setup, not so much for more power. The other thing I was looking at was pack weights, I'm planning on using packs from HobbyKing. I know they're not the best, but I can get a lot more for my money there which means more flying time for me.

A 6S 5000mah pack seems to be between 750g to 820g.
A 5S 3000mah pack seem to be around 420g or so each.
A 6S 3000mah pack seem to be around 500g or so each.

The difference in weight doesn't seem to be a big difference on paper, not sure how it will translate in the air yet though. I was worried about balance, but it seems that a lot of people are running 8S, 10S, and even 12S setups and getting them balanced ok.

Thanks again for your input, I'm really looking forward to getting the heli and getting everything setup on it. I'm so glad that electric is finally affordable, I always hated nitro myself.

The thing about running HV is finding a motor in the 600 class with low enough KV so that you don't have to gear up so much. If you can keep the stock gearing, the better. Remember you will be shooting for a hovering RPM of about 1650 for that class of heli, and then around 2100 or so for aerobatics. Look for as low a Kv motor as you can for that class of motor. I think you'll find 8S the more reasonable compromise in voltage and efficiency. You don't want to run your ESC dramatically low, or it can overheat and shutdown.

I agree with Erich.

Most 6S 600 class set ups are pretty tough on batteries. Threads to this effect are a dime a dozen on the electric forums. A few guys get reasonable performance, but you won't here much about good flight times. I saw one last summer that had running currents higher than my 12S 90 sized model, and the run times were lousy.

An 8S set up geared correctly should comfortably get you in the 8 minute flight time range. You save energy by hovering at a modest rpm, then turn it up for the few minutes of the aeros. That run time is highly unlikely with 6S unless you turn the headspeed down to the point where aeros won't be what you'll like.

I thought I would post an update on this topic now that I've hovered the bird for the first time yesterday.

I ended up building the 600 as a 10S bird with the following setup:

Trex 600ESP
CC 85HV
Scorpion 4025-740
15t pinion
Rotortech 600mm
Stock align paddles
400mm flybar

I'm using the Set RPM feature and have the following setup:

Normal: 1650
Idle 1: 1950
Idle 2: 2050

The hover seemed pretty smooth, might need to tweak the governer gain though.

I didn't have long to mess with it yesterday, only had about 10 minutes to mess around. I did notice that my tail wasn't completely smooth, at times it would kind of jump around, need to look at that.

The electric power was amazing though, no messing around with needles was great!

It's great to finally have it in the air though, looking forward to start practicing!

what packs did you go with?

it's better to ask for forgiveness than for permission

I just went with some HK 3000mah 20C 5S, I got 6 packs to make 3 10S packs.

I'm not planning on doing hard 3D, so I figured 20C would ok for now.

I've only really used two of the packs so far, but once I've gotten some more cycles on them, I'll update with how they're doing.
