It says they used JATO or jet assisted take off bottles to help blast the aircraft into the air.But how do you stop when landing?

Pitch change mechanism in the blade hubs...

It's called "feathering the blades" if you loose an engine the dead prop is feathered so it can freewheel and not provide drag.

Conversly while landing, especially on short fields the pitch of the props is reversed providing much more stopping power than the brakes....which typically get red hot anyway.

While I've not landed on snow and ice on one of these, I've got MANY short feild landings in one...some of which are pretty exciting...feilds that abruptly end off the top of a cliff....or the ocean...

Ask your Doctor if getting off your ass is right for you.

Jesse, that may be the most impressive Hercules clip ever filmed. Awesome.

Didnt know that....I can't claim to know anything more than the drivel I spouted seeing as that was from experience and talkin to a crewchief for about 10 min...

I'm mearly a helicopter flunkie/gunner that has flown his helo's (in planes such as this) all over the world and some godforsaken spots wondering if they're gonna get the pig stopped fore' we plung to our deaths....seems I'm still here so it must work.

Ask your Doctor if getting off your ass is right for you.

Just educating, not correcting. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

I flew all over Sweden in a Swedish C-130 riding on jump seats for 2 weeks.

We asked if he could do a short field approach to land once, needless to say, the balance of the plane shifted significantly as all the occupants ended up against the forward bulkhead!!

Awesome plane.

Wait..what!?!?! No, that can't be!

SilverEagle...

Sorry I re-read your post....then mine....It seems as if mine came across as a bit snippy....not intended. I did not think you were correcting me, I was mearly acknoledging the fact that I didn't know that tidbit of info you shared...

And yes, I've been in your position quite a few times as well...also wondering if all the chains holding the 27K lb helo were gonna hold...

Great fun I tell ya.

Ask your Doctor if getting off your ass is right for you.
