Looking forward to it, Erich!

Got Kyle's vid finished, seperated 2 different ways:

"pic-in-pic"

Watch at YouTube

and the same flight "side-by-side"

Watch at YouTube

It ends up that lots of piro's don't necessarily make for the best on-board footage!

Well, I got it posted, but the vibes of a Nitro model plus the oil make a tail mounting not practical. Here is the shaky result. I also lost a lot of resolution running through Windows Movie Maker to get the size down from 428Megs:

Dude! What governor are you running? That head speed is all over the place. The video quality would probably be better if you stabilized the head speed.

Welcome to a different style of flying other than 3D. We in precision aerobatics tend to run our engines a lot harder at the top of their power limit for longer. The set RPM for my Idle Up is 2050, on 720mm blades. What you are seeing is the head loading from pulling into a high speed, high G manuever at top pitch. Because of the winds, I was having to use everything the motor had just to stay on line

Here's a video from this year's Nats of the same model and manuevers. You may want to fast forward past the hovering stuff:

Erich!
Despite the wavy fotage, it was a pleasure to watch. Those half rols are so precise - the way the heli just attains a position as though you've snapped it onto a point in time & space BANG.

My loops with my Rappy 30 are passable, but my rolls are still sloppy and I can see I have a fair way to go, despite the obvious differences in the size and power of the machines

Thanks,
Tach.

Thanks, Tach! That was the effect I was aiming for. I didn't want the world going by in a blur, but still wanted to convey the speed. I'm still working on a mounting solution, but doubt it will be on the tail again

playfair, do you have a picture of how you mounted the pen cam? I just bought one because of this thread.

Erich,
Thank you for the reply. I admit to knowing next to nothing about precision aerobatics.
I am confused though. I would thought that precision aerobatic helicopters would be smoother than your run of the mill machines.
With all due respect, why do the Playfair and Stacy videos look better?
All they did was use a couple of tie wraps to secure the camera to the tail fin.
Thanks for your help.

I just mounted mine with double sided tape to the end of the horizontal stab...which no matter how smooth a bird look on the exterior, is always got some resonance going. I expected as much...

I haven't had a chance to try other mounting options yet...but I'll find something.

Here is a vid with one of those keychain cameras velcro'd and strapped to the canopy of my 450. No fancy stuff, it was 25 degrees out and the 450 was stiff. And I can't do a lot of fancy stuff anyway. The raw vid from these 720x480 cameras is quite good, but degradation occurs by the time it goes through Windows Movie Maker and onto Youtube. Fun little gadget. Yeah, that's my little yellow house, but it's all mine....

I normally fly the other way, I have a bunch of acreage behind me, but I wanted to not face the sun.

The TF memory cards that these Keychain cams use,are they the same as the ones in cell phones? Mine in the OBamaBerry says MicroSD and I was wondering if the keychain cam memory was installed in a cell phone would the video playback on screen. I ordered 2 of the ones that only use external memory and was going to give them to friends. Playback on the cell phone would be cool though.

Yes, it is the same card. I took my card out of my Motorola Q and put it in the keychain cam. I have not tried to play it on the phone, but when you record a vid and plug it into your computer, it will play straight from the card on whatever media player you have in the computer. It's an avi file initially so if your phone will play avi files, then you should be good to go.

We get so used to to seeing all of the 3D every time we go online, you start to take for granted what it takes to be able to do it. this was a very cool look behind the scenes, Thanks!

Tachyon, that's surprisingly vibe free for a nitro (nice calm flying by the way). I am thinking I will take a beat up Raptor canopy I have and building a mount inside the nose with a small opening for the lens.

I hate to say it, but these onboard vids really only look good with large sweeping moves to me. The 3D stuff is cool, don't get me wrong, I just like seeing the aerial footage. All the spinning and stuff just looks like a crazy blur. I like the swash shots though. A tail shot might be cool.

Thanks Jason - I was pleasantly surprised by the smooth images too. Thanks for appreciating the smooth flying too I just like doing stuff in a scale-plus manner. I need to try some pie dish manoeuvres and improve my backward flying. I may try and mount the camera somewhere on the tailboom

BTW - you'll only need a tiny opening for the lens: The hole in the casing itself is only about 2-3mm
