I think you are missing the point. The point is that "socialism" is used currently in US politics as a derogitory statment. It seems that most don't know what socialism is. The US, and every western country, is socialist. If they weren't the services listed above would be, exactly, as discribed. It used to be that way in the US. If you have seen "Gangs of New York" you know this for yourselves. It was a fictional story, but the situations it discribed were very very real.

It took most of New York burning down and millions dieing before services like police and fire were socialized. We learn from history that a completly free market approach to services that all require for the maintanance of "Life, liberty and freedom" takes those things away for the vast majority.

Socialism isn't a bad thing, in some areas it is nessisary to insure freedom for all. Such as those listed, and health care.

unspelling the world one misprint at a time.

This thread is so full of it. The fire department fights fires for the good of all. Think about it. If your house was burning and no one put it out most likely the entire neighborhood is going to go up in flames.

If you are dying from a disease you can't pay for and "we" foot the bill who else does that save? NO one. THAT is socialism.

Not everyone lives in a neighborhood. So according to you if someone has a house in the middle of a 20 acre plot then it should burn since it's not going to damage any other houses. That doesn't make sense.

No, that's being a crappy person, human being, and/or citizen. Nothing like keeping your citizens sick and basically keeping your country weak. Any real patriot or someone that truly loves this country would want it to be the strongest it could be. That includes the health of the people.

Come on, if that was the only services government was incharge of the taxes would be no more 5/10% max that would be great. Also those things don't really run our lives. when government gets close to 50% and is telling you how to live Thats more like socialism but were headed to more of a facist state right now. Also I've seen alot of pot holes in my time that government never fixed I guess you never been to new orleans! I mean whats next the media oh wait they pretty much control that to. There has to be a line that shouldn't be crossed. I wouldn't say these services are socialism, we all benefit from them. Under socialism some benefit while others are taxed to death.

That is not what I said.

Are you lost? I never said anything about not helping the sick. I just pointed out that it would be more of a socialist program then the fire department. sheesh!!

Twistedrotor and Pseudonym,

I think the main problem with socialized healthcare is the fact that 50% of the country would be footing the bill for 100%...

Oh, and the fact that Government programs NEVER save money. EVER!

Stupidity can be cured. Ignorance is for life!

socialism - a political theory advocating state ownership of industry
socialism - an economic system based on state ownership of capital
wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

Socialism is the govt owning what would be private industry and the capital to control it.

Currently the captial is owned by the FED (which is not govt) and the govt does own part of industry (GM etc..)

Everyone also fails to recognize the difference between state and federal laws. Under the constition the Federal govt is supposed to protect the rights of the people, and the states are supposed to protect everything else.

The fire dept, police dept, etc are all run by the state on a state budget. That is not socialist they are not industry or capital. The services mentioned by the OP also fall inline with protecting people and their property.

Federal plans to take over industry (Health Care, Medicine, Auto, Banking etc...) is a socialist move.

Amen, I wonder sometimes what is taught in civic classes these days. The Federal government has usurped many a state's right. Sometimes at the limp wristed state politician's hand as easy way to avoid the
blame and pass it to the Fed. There is a reason the constitution limited the federal government powers. What type of control did they fight against to become a country and try to protect the country from becoming? Believe it, or not to your on detriment, the more power is centralized the more control a few will wreak on the many. Your kids won't like it, but it will be to late for them.

"Socialism isn't a bad thing"
It is when you're in a Representative republic.
On the civilization scale its like a step back wards.

Didn't your people get to socialism from a monarchy ? So a win for you.
Usually its from a dictatorship or a monarchy.

We have too many factors such as lawyers ,lobbyist ,unions , and entrenched bureaucrats to make a good for all change .

Most of what you socialist are trying to sell is what are own
democrats(they changed the name from socialist years ago) are.

Same sh%t different wrapper.
