Hi folks,
I plan to use HC Profi with GPS for aerial photography. I also want to see the GPS, altimeter and etc values during flight, so this means I need something like the Eagletree system too. That will mean 2 GPS aerials and maybe 2 video downlinks on my heli. I need to know if this will cause a problem. Please let me know what you think.
Cheers,
Ahmet

The GPS antenna on the Eagle Tree system is magnetic. It does swing a compass needle when it is placed near it. So you will have to find a place to mount it away from the Profi GPS antenna so it does not effect the electric magnetic compass inside the antenna housing.

page 2 of the manual has these parameters for distance of the antenna module to sources of magnetic interference:

"Drive motor: approx. 25 - 45 cm
Servos: approx. 15 - 20 cm
Steel parts (tail rotor drive shaft, pushrod etc.): approx. 8 - 15 cm."

your best bet for locating the antenna is to get a good compass and mount it where your Profi antenna is going to be without anything else mounted near it and then put your components back in place to see if the compass needle moves. No fun to remove everything so it's easier to mount where there is nothing close!
It would also be interesting to see what happens when you run current through any wiring near the antenna.

Or even better, putting the compass on without removing anything first, turn the system on and see what happens

I'd say after mounting the GPS unit for the profi you could view the magnetometer graphic on the profi software and watch to see if the needle deviates as you bring the GPS unit for your data logger close to it. You could use that as a guide for locating the secondary GPS antenna out of range of the Profi GPS unit.

Regards

Fergus

uh-huh...don't give Santa any ideas.
Then again it might be a good economic recovery idea if he's got to hire more elves to fly them out on X-mas Eve!
