On a serious note

I was watching a documentary about the Tsunami that hit the coast of Thailand and killed 250,000 people. One young lady from Sri-Lanka lost 5 members of her immediate family. Her explanation for her loss was that(after a lot of thought)it was a test of her Roman Catholic faith by God to make it stronger than ever??????I really felt for this young lady and all those involved, but i cannot get my head around that statement.

I do have sympathy for those that lost their lives and lost loved ones , but it's difficult to have sympathy for someone that stupid .

I suppose

if you are really committed to your faith, you must first ask yourself,i am a loyal follower of my faith yet you"God"let my family die,why is that, what did i do wrong? Not being able to come up with an answer to that question must have led her to her final conclusion i suppose

God doesn't control life like so many of you think. The earth does it's thing, people do their thing. People die. We are here for a very short time. Some shorter than others. Misery is part of this life. If God helped everyone we would never die and there would be no misery. No reason to worry about the way we live act or feel. God will always fix it.

NOT

Really the question is what happens when we die?

Do we have some afterlife? Do we have the ability to look at our past life? Will we be judged?

No one knows for sure except the scientists.

There are probably ancient Alien races out there

watching we "newbies"waiting for us to grow up and shake off the old superstitions of the past before they contact us.Maybe the earth is a cell part of a far larger body sat in an alien scientists test tube somewhere.Might sound far fetched"ahem"talking of far fetched ideasIf i ever perchance to meet that alien teenager, boy i am gonna kick his ass,we might have advanced so much fartherEspecially if he introduces himself as"God" or "Jesus".
That's the problem you see. When you talk of imagination and make believe you can have infinitely many of these ideas/concepts etc. . . . and since they are "faith" they are unreproachable.

There is nothing to stop anyone having "moronic" imaginings like the above. The tragedy is that most "believe" in it and have "faith" in it. Over 100,000 years ago when we were all living in primitives tribes nobody gave a stuff for BS like this.
Really the question is what happens when we die?
No one is qualified to answer that question in a definitive way.
Do we have some afterlife? Do we have the ability to look at our past life? Will we be judged?

No one knows for sure except the scientists.
No, as I said again, the scientists do not know. Even worse, they won't even know how to attack the problem, hence it's a dead end.

Hence whether we have an afterlife or not is also not decidable. No one is qualified to put airy, fairy crap into this and claim certain things about it. The tragedy is that there are those who believe in the BS that was written in some silly book.
I do have sympathy for those that lost their lives and lost loved ones , but it's difficult to have sympathy for someone that stupid
It's because they have moronic beliefs, nivlek. Why do drug addicts always do the things they do: steal, sponge off, commit crimes to feed their habits, always going back to it, putting a strain on their loved ones and descent into social oblivion all for a silly dependency on some illegal chemicals giving them a fix?

The religious are no different - except what they do is legal. They poison themselves with their faith, and that in turn poisons their perception of the one reality that we live in.

you mean the form of reason that has no logical, ethically consistent basis?

You're welcome to that.

Normal, rational people, don't care. And don't need to care. Nor do they need to waste most of their lives studying something which, because of the Darwinian process that happens on a grand scale, will make your religion (and others for that matter), a part of man's cultural history assigned to a collection in museum.

So, lets see now. 80% of the American public claims to be Christian. That means, I assume, that they also believe in God.

That means you are saying that 80% of Americans are irrational.

That in itself is irrational.

No , to assume that 80% of the population are correct without examining the facts is irrational .

Well heck. "Fact" and "Faith" are 2 entirely different matters and are not compatible for obvious reasons. If you want Websters definitions, I can provide them. But, that should not be necessary for reasonably intelligent folks. That is, unless your are not intelligent. Let me know.

Now, you have to admit that at least some percentage of that 80% must be relatively intelligent folks. I would imagine that that percentage has not done a study of your lack of faith, or could give a rats a## about or your lack of faith. At least until you insult them because of their faith.
If you base your opinions on what the majority believes , then you are a sheep.

Like it or not, majority rules. That's what originally made this country so great. Now it's getting undermined by the cry babies who can't handle the world not being benign for everyone. They want a politically non offensive correct world that everyone fits into. It's a faithless world. Not one I would enjoy living in. Soilent Green

yes, of course, hootowl and dennis, the majority is ALWAYS right?

The contrary is the case. Think about it.

Did all the great scientific discoveries comes from largely team work? Answer: NO. They were mainly the result of individual efforts. In our capitalist society where's all the major wealth distributed? Not to the majority, but the absolute minority. In any area of expertise, is it ruled by majority reasoning? No, only a small elite few experts.

It is total, utter idiocy and utterly moronic for anyone to claim that they have "faith" in such and such a religion. Utter idoicy. The facts of the matter is if they were born in a different country and circumstances they would end up believing in whatever BS they were in contact with. This shows that people's faith is subject to historical and circumstantial effects - and it's not arrived at independently of those effects.

Hopefully, the Darwinian process will wipe out this silliness slowly and permanently.

No need, Dennis.

Look what happened to all the silly pagans. Look at the silly Gods of ancient Greece, Mount Olympus and all that. Where are they now? There are more examples, but I can't be bothered to dig them up.

And we keep on telling you lot: the future is Darwinian - as is our present and our past. There is nothing anyone can really do about it. It's simply not negotiable at all. So you can all have your silly faith all you like - it basically amounts to absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. I don't need to apologise for that, since I don't apologise for the truth.

Now there is something I agree with. Someone could pray for a life only to have it answered half of the time. If a life is saved, God made it so. If a life is lost, God had a higher/better purpose for that person. Bollocks.

Nothing fails like prayer!

Rrrrrrright - Deet
The blind continue to lead the blind right down Main Street past our reviewing stand -- to a smelly, overflowing dumpster which they promptly proclaim to be The Promised Land, and immediately begin praying to. Meanwhile WE enjoy our popcorn, pretzels and beer -- and try not to laugh crumbs out our noses.

Those myth-munching Fable Thumpers are always good for some chuckles.
