After a crash followed by the chicken dance, I decided to upgrade my 2 yr old HDX450 head and grips to the 4mm spindle version (no choice really since they don't sell the 3mm grips any more. Well, I just got them and I can't get them together. I think the thrust bearings are supposed to fall all the way inboard on the grips to the already installed bearing, but they stop a few millimeters shy of going all the way in, because there seems to be a milled "lip" on the inside of the grip. Because of this, the spindle is too short to work.

Anyone have these?

Hi flyingquisinart,

I have exactly similar issue with the hdx450-01 v4 blade grips when use it with Copterx 450 se v2 (align clone) main rotor hub. I am thinking about return it and get the Align Se v2 blade grips instead. How about you? Did you solve the problem? Thanks. Don

I used the "contact us" link on Helidirect's website and had some back and forth with them. They think it's a faulty set and told me to send it back. The issue is that the washer sizes are screwed up. The way the grips are milled only a smaller OD washer can fit down in there. The problem is that the small OD thrust washer also has the small ID, but it needs to have the larger ID, so in short the washers don't fit the grips. I originally ordered the combo set of the grips plus head, but I'm only sending the grips (and bearings) back. I made it perfectly clear to them that they need to make sure the smaller ID washer fits inboard, otherwise I just want an exchange for the Align parts. I did this on Thursday. They insisted they will get it right but I'm not holding my breath---it's a design flaw and you and I are probably the first people to buy the aftermarket parts. I think in the end I'm going to wind up returning the head and grips and paying twice as much for the Aligns.

I'll keep you posted. If you don't hear from me by Friday feel free to send me a PM.

PS, if I reverse the washers, 1) copper washer, 2)small ID inboard (also happens to be smaller OD), then 3) balls, then 4)larger ID outboard toward the grip, then 5) tiny flat washer, 6) bolt, it fits perfectly, but it's wrong--there's slop in the grips, bad tracking, and no collective oomph. That's why I think it's a design problem that the aren't going to be able to fix right away. One of the Helidirect guys claims to have and fly the HDX v4 heli without these problems, but I take this with a grain of salt. Luckily I also have a nitro heli that I got back in order meanwhile.

flyingquisinart,

Thanks for the reply. Lucky that i found your post on time since i already planned to get the HDX450-02 to match w/ 01 blade grips hopefully to solve the problem but after reading your post i decided to return the grips to helidirect. The Align v2 grips were out of stock so I had to order it from different site. The HDX450-01 grips also has problem w/ 315mm Align pro blade, it is too tight to fit in.
Align is pricey but good quality. I have never had serious but minor issue w/ Align parts on my 450.
Looking forward to hear from you again, i like to know how it will because i also like HDX parts if it has no problem.
Have you tried Align v3 head yet? I heard good thing about it but not sure...

Additional: I don't know about HDX but i looked at Align v2 manual, the order of the thrust bearing is exactly what you wrote there. I did the same but it did not even go through for mine. For the IDs, they say "Loose out, tight in", which mean the small ID go in first (because it tight on the shaft), after the copper, then the ball, then the larger ID (because it loose on the shaft), then a tiny washer and bolt, which turns out exactly what you did and it went through for your but mine...???

By the way, have you tried the Black v4 (SX450SE-HS1) instead of blue?
What are the different beside of color? thanks

Helidirect just replied to my contact and claimed they are able to make it work and that i did not use the bearings in correct order. They also said they will post the info on the website.
I don't know about you but i already returned mine and bought the Align from another site since helidirect is out of stock.
You may try what they are going to post the new info on their website and see if it works for you.
Please let me know.
Thanks,
Don

i thought you want the larger diameter race to go into grip first. that way spindle is supported on the outside instead of the inside. is this what you meant in your post.

Yes you are right the larger id go in first. I think flyingquisinart has tried both way (?). larger id go in first does not work because the spindle can not go in all the way. If he let the smaller id go in first then it fits perfectly but slop in the grips, bad tracking, and no collective oomph. I already returned mine right after the first message posted.

Don,

I sent you a PM.

Neil,

As far as I know the smaller ID washer always goes on the grip side just as you stated. I even posted a thread to make sure--I had 3 or 4 responses on it.

I sent HD another email (actually a ticket via their web site) to get the status. They suggested I send the grips back! Uuggh. Did that 2 weeks ago and included printouts of the conversation back and forth with their cust service and got an acknowledgement that they were received over a week ago. Frustrating!

To anyone that finds this thread in the future.....

I have had these grips. They are nice for the price. They didnt last me long as some of you know I had a head explosion from a blade failure.

Anyway....To any one that wants to use the HDX450 V4 grips on a trex 450 or any clone, make sure you know that the spindle dimensions are a little different. Align and clone 450 sev2's are just over 40mm and the HDX450 V4 spindle is 42mm. Just buy the HDX spindles or use different spacers on the 40mm spindle.

Helidirect is now ignoring my emails requesting a refund. I'll have to call them and be a jerk to get my money back apparently.

They responded to me shortly after my last post. They are working with the manufacturure to come up with a solution. I have never actually had a problem before with HD to be fair, and I am very happy with the quality of the HDX. It flies like it's on rails, survives crashes very well. One of my grips had a slight bend where the ball attaches due to a crash and I wanted to get new grips. By this point they don't have replacements and I have to buy V4 stuff...which I was very happy to do--can't beat $40 for head and grips, especially with a new 4MM spindle. That was only complaint was the spindle bent just by looking at it, however, I just kept a bunch in by toolbox. A crash usually cost just a set of blades and a spindle, maybe a main shaft--that's the beauty of 450's.

Maybe you can offer a suggestion: I'm thinking I can drop in the actual Align head and grips which is going to cost me twice as much money. Do you know where/what brand I can substitute for cheaper? I just dropped money on a new Pantera and don't want to spend $80 right now.

Welli got mine yesterday and they are awesome. Zero slop. Super smooth. I agree that the thrust bearings will a little hard to get in but they went. Maybe they have resolved the issue and these are from a new batch.

You should be able to use the align parts if you want because I am using HDX parts on Trex sev2 clone. For some of the parts you do have to file or add spacers, but for the grips you will be fine. Just make sure you buy the spindle that goes with the grips you want to use. And double check the specs on you head. some are a little wider than others. with a little tweaking I have found that any part will fit if you want it to.
