i have a blade 400 with a 401 and fut.9650. its been a great gyro but now its crapping out on me. its not holding (like the gain is down to 5%) but no matter where the gain is it doesn't make a difference. now i have it all the way up to 150% on my JR x9303 2.4 and its holding worse then rate mode!

any sugestions welcome, its just pi$sing me off.

HELP!

Do you have your gain lead plugged into gear and device select menu gear tied to gyro? If so your gain should be in the 70's. If it doesnt hold well check for something mechanical, belt slop, missing teeth. If everything mechanical checks out, try changing the mechanical gain, ie moving the ball farther out on the servo. (you then must verify limits) If that doesnt work, get to a field where someone can help you.
I doubt the gyro is failing unless theres been a crash or something.

When you first power up the gyro, after initialization, does the light on top of the gyro stay lit solid? If it doesn't stay lit, then it's in rate mode, not heading hold. Also note that it will blink when it gets servo inputs from the radio. So don't move the rudder stick on the TX while checking this.

I have had nothing but bad luck with 401's. Smash it to bits and buy something better. I just lost a trex 600e due to a 401 failure. Some guys have good luck with them but I never have. It may work fine for a few months but then one day, BAM, it doesn't do what it is supposed to do.

yes the light is solid, it has been crashed many times, and the plug with one wire is in the gear. the 3 wire one is in the rudd.

Is gear tied to gyro under device select? If not gain is adjusted under gear atv's, if so gain is adjusted in gyro menu.

Oh crap my bad, gain lead needs to go to aux 2, sorry. Then tie it to gyro. It will then work from gyro screen. Otherwise the way it is your gear atv's control gain.

nope, that wouldn't work anyway. i was just on the phone with our local align rep and he said it does not work well with that hole tieing situation. i described the symptoms and he declaired the crystal in the gyro is cracked, a.k.a. ITS DEAD!

I assume you are using a 6100 rx, if this is the case you will plug gain (single wire) into gear BUT on the 9303 gear is not asignable to a gyro menu. You need to use gov. for this, it works just as well. Also I would try checking mechanical set up in rate mode.

ah yes i had this same problem with a 401 and a x9303. How many chanels is your reciever? 6? if your using a 6 ch you'll need to set up your gain using the chanels endpoints instead of using the gain feature in your tx. you'll need a 7 ch rx if you want to use the 3 position flight mode switch to also control you gain. if you do a bit of googling you'll find some handy info on using endpoints to set gain.

It is much easier to asign gear as a govenor and set gain accordingly, also you will have a setting for each flight mode.

Sorry to be an ahole but with Futaba radios you just use what you expect to use. Gyro is gyro, gov is gov and so on

Some guys have good luck with them
i would have to say the word some in this statement should be changed to most. any electronic device will have problems after several crashes. you still see 401's on henseleits, turbine's and many other high dollar top end helis and these guys are happy. i've never had a complaint about my 401's unless i smash them in a crash. jmho.

I do see people using them in non 3d machines like turbines and such (not saying people don't use them in 3d machines so lets not start that argument!!) but you don't see Curtis or Alan or Jason or any other top notch pro pilot using them in their machines!! The 401 works great for non aggressive flying but you tell me a 401 can hold and perform just as good as a Solid G or a 611 on hard maneuvers? If you say it does then you are smoking crack!! I have NEVER got a 401 to hold as good as my 611 and I have never seen anyone using a 401 that does hardcore 3d. Light to heavy sport flying sure but not aggressive 3d!!

Like another poster said, "a 401 is so 90's" There is soooooooo much better technology out there now.

Im just sayin'!!

I do that on all my JR radios too, so what's your point? It's not my fault some folks can't figure things out . . . nor the fault of the radio . . .

i know this is an old arguement but, CY and the other pros mentioned aren't flying the 401 because they're marketing other gyros. most guys doing harcore 3d before the 611 and solid g, spartans, etc.. were flying 401s. it can be done, has been done and is still being done. granted it's not the most current gyro out there, but i do beleive most guys that knock it can't outfly it either.
