Hi Everyone

Just purchased a 520 futaba gyro. Wondering if I can install if facing in any direction. I'd like to have the verbage (text) on the gyro perpendicular to the North South direction of the helicopter. It would essentially be installed facing sideways. Is this okay?

Thanks

Not sure what exactly you mean.

It must be mounted flat to the rudder axis. Where the sides face don't matter. If its upside down or right side up is irrelevent.

Except for the reversing switch.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

Thanks for your msg

Upside down and right side up I definately understand...also facing forward vs. backward I can also understand because there is the ability to reverse the mechanism in it's programming. My question is if it's not facing forward or backwards, but rather I twist it 90 degrees from it's forward or backwards position...to where it's now perpendicular to the Forward / backward position...is this okay?

Hope that made sense...Thanks!

You can mount that as you are saying.

You dont reverse it if you mount it forward versus backwards. You reverse it if you flip it upside down.

A gyro senses rotation about an axis (in this case the rudder) and applies a correction to a servo. It has no knowlege of its orientation or heading beyond that. If you flip it on its side and hook it up to the elevator servo, as long as its flat to the pitch axis it will work just fine (its how a VBar works).

It just has to be flat to its axis its controling.

Think about it, if its directional mounting mattered, how you would you fly backwards or sideways?

Before you install the gyro try to install it so you have acess of the switch on the side if you ever need to use it and you can quickly see what color the light is on the gyro to tell what mode its in. Also there two different thickness foam pads to mount the gyro. Thin for 250 up to 30 size and thick for 50 to 90 size. orientation dont mater but its good to have acess to the switch.

Yes, as long as you mount it on a flat surface, you will have no problems. I love the 520 gyro.

It's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

If you can plan the placement of the gyro so you have 90D of freedom of installation, (IOW be able to take the gyro and turn it 90 D and remount it) it would be nice to do. The reason for this is that in the unlikely event that you see any issue with drifting, one of the common solutions is to reorient the sensor 90D to its previous mounting orientation. Make sure you trim the tail out in normal mode before flying in ACVS, too.
