The problem with buying a 9 channel TX....

...is that then you will need 12 channels!

..hmm.. I haven't found a jutsifiable way of using more than 10 yet (unless we start talking scale model stuff or AP)

Here's a thought though and I haven't worked it out properly yet in my head, just thinking aloud...

I have a DX7 but can I still buy a 9 channel RX?

Why? Because I can make the Y Leads redundant by putting the VoltMagic, Jewel, switch and anything else that doesn't need a dedicated TX channel into their own socket...

Does that make sense, would it work, is it possible?

How am I going to manually turn the governer off without having the on/off lead connected.
the GV-1 has 3 speed settings. Most people use 2 head speeds.

an option is to set S1 to 1000 RPM's, which turns the unit off. As you set the RPM down for S1, you'll see the display say --Off--. The gv-1 will not activate as long as its set on S1 with this setting.

I usually do this with mixes, but you could do it with a 3 position switch as well.

My 12FG runs with a 14 channel rx (obviously only using 12 channels).. so certainly possible... but whether it works on Spectrum would be a question for them unless someone here hs tried it

You can

Always use a more channel receiver with the TX, you just will not be able to control the other channels from the TX but they will give you slots to put in things like the Jewel generator and the voltmagic without having to use a Y harness.

7 channel is minimum and for a gv-1 and a gyro I would Y the gv-1 on/off switch with the gyro normal/heading hold and use the normal mode of the gyro to check for tail drift/adjust the linkage and also leave it setup that way indefinately so I could occasionally turn off the gv-1 and make sure there is no significant engine speed change indicating the motor is running really lean or rich. Its always a good check to toggle the gv-1 off and back on whenever you suspect something of this nature.

Sounds good I will try a 9 channel RX when I can afford one, maybe one will come up second hand.

Graham (gramey) Raja's answer might be of interest to you here as well seen as you are in the same boat as me, get a 9 channel RX...

I worked some overtime this past bank holiday to boost the RC funds hence why I was thinking of getting the DSX9. I've got some credit at my LHS if I put my overtime with this and what they'll allow me for my DX7 I can afford to get one.
Before I splash out any money I think I'm going to try it as it is now first and then if I'm still having problems I'll bite the bullet and get the 9.
My only concern is would a 9 channel be sufficient or is someone going to say "We'll really you should have got a 12", which I really can't afford as there's an even bigger gap in the price between 9 & 12 than there is between 7 & 9?

Well the real answer to the question is that in terms of flying there is no reason why you cannot fly with your 7 channel set up just like I have done for over 100 flights.

If you are having problems in general 9 channels isn't going to solve them. It gets rid of Y leads and enables the GV1 on/off and 3 head speed function, a lot of money to do just that but it is the way forward eventually...

Now go do some flying!

If only Kevin, club is only open on Monday's, Thursday's & Sunday's and the wind has been blowing too hard here for even a gasser. It appears to have dropped some today so hopefully if it stay's a bit calmer I'll be out there tomorrow!

9 channel RX is enough

I use an 8 channel TX with 9 channel receivers and use up all the ports and it works fine. I also plug in the Jewel into the gv-1 mixture port as actually I'm using everything on the receiver for the controls and the 9th channel I plug the voltmagic into. You won't need 12 channels for a helicopter, I think that is more suited for some big warbird with bomb-bay doors or something like that!
