Just opened the box to my new Redline 53 and I see it comes with 2 extra head shims. I'm going to be running 30% heli fuel so should I just put 1 shim in?

Thanks

Lots of great info posted about this out there. The general consensis is to add the shims as follows:

15% nitro no shims
20% nitro .004 shim
30% nitro .008 to .012(both shims added)

Some say that an Enya #3 might be too hot with 30% and to stick with an OS #8

My favorite advice has been from the TT german camp who said to add the shims if the needle becomes too sensitive during tuning. I found after removing my .004 shim that the temp change per click of the main needle was much more pronounced.

As an example, on 20%CP with the .004 shim I was just under 2.5 on the main needle but the temps rarely went past 180. After pulling the shim I reset to 2.75 and somewhere between there and 2.5 the temps were already touching 200. Not overly hot but causing me to be cautions of my leaning from that point.

All and all this is a pretty cool engine. Keep an eye on your temps as you tune you should be okay.

Thanks for the info. What is a good temp to run the redline at? I added the .004 shim but may add the .008 I should fly it first and see how it runs. When I took the head off I noticed there were already shims in it.

You should have found a factory head gasket in there that's about .018 thousandths. Just drop your .004 on top of that and enjoy the sound and thrill of owning a Redline .53.

Sounds like you are on your way!

That head gasket was stuck to the head so I put the shim under it. Is that bad? Should I change it around? The head gasket looked exactly like the shim I put under it.

Nope... that is fine. You do not need to move them around, they are the same thing, just the stock one is a lot thicker.

During break-in I was trying to keep mine between 150-160-ish. Now that it is broken in, it seems to enjoy the 180ish mark. Some of the guys I fly with were having problems keeping theirs cool, just after break-in.
They were seeing them jump up above 215 and higher. After adding the extra shim, things seem to have settled down.

Mine came with no extra shims in the box. I bought it 2 weeks ago. Where were they in the packaging? I threw the paper packing material in the trash. I hope I didn't toss them! Anyway, my Redline 53 is running strong on 30%. And it idled out of the box better than any of my OS Hypers or YS50's.

Mine came with .01mm .02mm and .04mm

Do I still install only the .04mm for 20% nitro?

Thank you in advance!
