so i assembled the swassh on the main shaft and the included linkages but i have not connected the servo linkages or the elevator link. my concern is, when i spin the head assembly by hand, the swash moves around. is this normal? i'm afraid if i leave it like this, that movement will be transferred to my servos. i'll try to explain better if i'm not making myself clear.

Have you installed the swashplate guide? See page 17 of the manual.

I ran into this one as well to to be honest, neither appears to be the correct answer. The correct answer is to center thing according to the mechanical limits and your servo configuration (which is what I did on mine though it is yet to be flown due to inclement weather) and you should be right.

Rate mode...
Set your tail up in rate mode on the gyro. How to do this is easy, put the gyro in rate mode and fly it, if it wants to go either way lengthen or shorten the tail linkage until the tail stays in place in flight(hover), switch the gyro back to HH and adjust the sensitivity and your ready to fly. It's a little trial and error here, but the time taken to do this is well spent as the tail rotor will lock right in once it is accurately centered.
If you have a smaller pitch gage (as in the eflite)or a way to measure the tail rotor pitch, using the boom as the straight line, with the servo arm straight up and down(close as you can get it without subtrim) adjust the rotors to about 4.5 to 5 dgrees of pitch. The leading edge of the TR blades will be on the boom side of center, IE closest to the boom. This is a good starting point, the variences will be what engine and fuel your running and what main blade sizes and weights, all of which could produce more or less torque. The differences here could be minimal but they could have an affect on the tail center, so be sure to recheck the center if you change anything from the original setup.

question,

to my newbie understanding, when the swash moves up, the pitch is supposed to increase? the leading edge of the blades should point up (spinning clockwise)?

mine motion is reversed when following the manual, the swash moves up but the pitch decreases. on page 28 of the manual, i cannot even see how the picture could mechanically accomplish what i'm saying in my first paragraph.

the ball link on the head would have to trail and not lead in the head's rotation. someone have a pic of their P50's head so i can clear my cloudy brain?

Swash down, pitch increases. That's correct!
