you do not need a governor and if its a new engine in your bird you need to set it up first. You can get the desired head speed via you throttle curves on your tx

I know I used lock tight why did my head explode

I got the governor when I got my first Sceadu. Best choice I made. It's solid, always holds the same head speed no matter what my collective pitch is at. Once it's configured, you just forget about it and enjoy. If your engine is running a little lean or a little rich that day, the governor will compensate on the throttle. Without the governor, that means your heli will run with a little more power or a little less power until you tune it just right again.

It's not mandatory by any means and many people fly without one, but having it removes one of the variables that can stunt learning in my opinion. As someone previously said.. it's like having a manual or an automatic. An automatic is a lot easier to learn to drive when you're already having to focus on a bunch of other things you aren't used to having to focus on. Every little bit you can remove from the list makes it that much easier to learn.

Beginner? If yes, you do not need a governor for now.

Not sure about the EVO, but with a lot of nitros it's a PITA to install the GOV after the build. Much easier to install and mount the sensor during the build.
