Was at the field yesterday with rcnut(Ray). He was flying his TREX700 with Align HZ 91 motor and Outrage 90 muffler. I think he has about 30 flights on that heli( he can chime in with more accurate number) I've been with him for about 95% of his flights and he runs that motor very rich, and just a few flights ago started to fly it like he "normally" would. IE not babying it, as we felt it was finally about broken in.

Well the Align didn't think so. It decided to break instead. 2nd Flight of the day, he was doing inverted nose down funnels and motor just quit. No leaning, no nothing, just a very sudden stop. No winding down of the motor as if fuel cut off etc...

Got back to ground and he tried to put the starter to it. Crunch stop was the result. My initial Dx(I'm in medical field lol) was broken con rod vs broken clutch. Took off backplate and con rod had snapped at the lower 1/2 of where it attached to crank. Brass insert in the conrod is GONE. I figure something must have taken out the brass insert and then the rod bearing is basically gone and at that rpm probably only took a few revs to toss the bottom part of where the con rod sits on the crank.

Hopefully Align/OS will warranty it, but after our recent experience with an OS SZ pumped it's very concerning. AT least he has that SZ pumped he can put in

EDIT::::
email recieved by Ray stated Align branded OS motors have NO WARRANTY AT ALL. I find this hard to believe, that there isn't something that can be done, but as it sits now Ray is out a motor that wasn't his fault. The $100 saved defineately isn't worth it now. Then again, the last motor he sent to OS was a nightmare to get warrantied so who knows if this would have been covered as well.

Edit 3/24/2010
After all this discussion I'm taking Grand RC out of the issue. I think there was some mis communication from both parties and I think enough fault to share, not just on GrandRC. This is in the past now and IMO the post on the latest motor failure sounds more like an install or tuning issue, and if it was me at the hobby shop I'd want to see the motor before deciding on any warranty purpose. So hopefully any failures are few and far between and since some respected members have had good luck with GrandRC's service, hopefully other's will as well.

Also, as I stated in other posts in this thread, ANY decision to warranty an Align motor is up to the reseller/distributer. After talking with Jeff Green from Heliwholesaler I know they take care of their customers on an as case basis. Hopefully, with GrandRC it will be that way too in the future.

On the upside the 91HZ OS in my Aurora seems to run great . First OS 91 I've run in a long time, since moving to YS 90's. I'm happy with it, so I'm hoping it stays together for a long time . First report of a bad con rod I've seen for the OS/Align 90 motors so I'm sure Ray just got a bumm motor.

Our HZ91 stopped in mid flight as well. It felt like someone just removed audio from the live flight. It had the upper end of the con rod smashed. It has been pulled and will be sent to OS for warranty service.

yeah that's about how this one sounded.

The lower part of the conrod where it attached to crank was "missing", the upper part was intact but bent and it must have skated around free in the chamber while the rest of the bits internally came to rest after some banging around.

just got a call from Ray the heli owner. Ed from Grand RC, or a rep at least from Grand RC has emailed him back stating NO Warranty on Align motors at all

Fair warning to anyone, pay the extra for the OS motor I guess or else you have absolutely no warranty.

id check the no warranty issue you should have some kind of consumer rights. In the uk we have 6 year guaranty against manufacturing defaults. The problem is proving that its not wear and tear. but like i said you should have some rights.

Not Entirely Accurate
I know with us, HeliWholesaler, any 700's bought with motors through our dealer network are warrantied by us as an authorized factory direct importer/distributor.

We are not allowed to sell motors separately to dealers, but any motor sold with a kit is okay and comes with our full support as well. Of course, the motor needs to be returned to us for our ultimate decision regarding neglect or an actual failure but so far we have not turned anyone way with regards to warranty support.

Maybe the motor in the kit needs to go back through the distribution channels. Align has many distributors in the US so maybe it needs to go back through where you dealer got it from. I know that would be the case for us meaning one of our dealers would need to work back through us.

Good luck. Any questions, feel free to email or call me if your buddy ends up not being supported. I am sure there is something that can be worked out to help him.

If I remember correct Enya had a no question asked 3 year replacement guarantee, even if crashed. When was the last time you saw a heli with an Enya .50 in it?

Typical
The $100 saved defineately isn't worth it now
Just think, there's folks finding that out after saving only 10 or 15 bucks by buying hyper 50's from Tiwan

Well guys, here is the e-mail conversation I had with GrandRC;

Ed,
Saturday, I was flying my 700N and the motor made a clunk clunk noise then died quickly. I landed and tried to restart it, but it wouldn't turn over. So we (the guys I fly with) opened the back (crank cover)
And found the connecting rod was broken, right at the crank! So now I need to know how to get it fixed. I have 35 flights on it and have not run it lean. Outrage muffler and running 25% Wildcat fuel, with
O.S. #8 plug.

Thanks,
Ray

You'll need a new connecting rod. Do you have an experience rebuilding an engine?

Ed,

Yes, I do. I've been rebuilding engines (RC) for 25 years now. However, I am concerned with the brass insert on the connecting rod and warranty. Shouldn't I be sending this motor in for repairs??

Also, if I fix it, I'm not sure what else is damaged. I only took off the back plate.

Align Motor has no warranty.

Ed,

So if it breaks, I fix it at my cost? Manufacturing defect?

Yes, that's why it's $100 cheaper than OS (although it's made by OS)
Here are the pic's I took of the remains....

So far I will need; piston and ring, connecting rod, wrist (boss) pin, main and front bearings. Not sure what condition the crank is in, I haven't removed it yet.

There is a 90 day warranty from Assurance on the Align 91, not sure who Ed uses or how long your friend has had the motor.

Sad to say but that's typical. I believe GrandRC gets their Align stuff from Assurance. Enough said

Roberto that phrase is a huge truth "Lo barato cuesta caro"

GrandRC is one of the Align distributors in US. As such, they get their product directly from Align Taiwan.

well if you get the Align motor just buy it in a combo at Heliproz and you should be covered. Not sure where the other e-tailers get their kits/motors from but with Heliproz you should be safe.
