I wonder if the original main gear had a resonant frequency which made it susceptible to vibrating, and the slight change in mesh/alignment together with reinforcement of the main gear disk resolves that.

Update
Update:

Well I decided to install the new gear despite having no problem with the old one.

While I was looking (once more) at the gear, I noticed something curious... its not tinted plastic (as I initially thought). It has a metallic shine which I found odd, so I dug up an old align 600N gear and confirmed my suspicions. It looks completely different than just "gray" gear. I've seen that shine before so I started to go through all my parts hoping I would find something similar and after 30 minutes searching I found a couple of Hitec servo Karbonite gears and guess what... the exact same grayish metallic shine. I wonder if those JR guys mixed something in the plastic?

After installing the gear I also noticed something different. Those guys with still the old black gear can do the test to confirm this... spin the old gear while holding the head (so that the one way runs) and listen to the sound. It will sound like there is sand (In my limited english I can't find the correct word but it has a characteristic clicking sound). Anyway, after installing the gray gear, all I get now is a soft steady sound (no whining and no grinding).

Going to test the new gear asap.

Tony

"thats easy to do without a gray gear. Just put the engine out of alignment, step on the boom and bend the flybar. I assure you it will fly very similar to a raptor... well maybe it will still track better"

I just pissed my pants......

I had the chance to do a couple of flights tonight with the gray gear and while I did not have the hum noise before, the drive train is now a lot quieter, in fact no gear noise at all. I like it even better now !

Did 8 flights today. Definitely quieter and smoother. No harsh sounds.
