The align system is different. It does not use flats on the shaft. It has 2 screws that go through the shaft holder and then the shaft itself. Once the screws pass through the shaft, the holes on the other side of the shaft holder are threaded, so as you tighten the screws, the shaft holder tightens down on the shaft. That's why you have to drill the holes into the shaft. To do that precisely you would need a drill press.
so is the the threaded holes on the other side of the shaft holder, a through hole?
any chance you can thread a grub screw to this threaded hole from the outside of the shaft holder?
if not, perhaps this threaded hole can be drill through and tap additional thread to use a grub screw?

The Shaft holder has a split in it. It is designed to squeeze the shaft to secure it. Forget grub screws, flats in the shaft and all that other stuff. Align designed this system different from all others.

unscrew it tonight.. using a wrench holding on the hex area, and it worked out... thanks for the tips guys

The thread seems to be OK, same for the one way.
You might want to really clean those threads with a toothbrush or something and maybe put some type of lube on them, say silicone grease or ATF or ??? - IIRC these are aluminum on aluminum threads so if they are starting to gall up it may lock on there next time you use it. Just a thought, I don't have this starter but I have seen them - nice.

Anybody tried it with the TP 2600mah 3s Prolite v2?

I have one, and it's a real tight fit, wondering if removing the shrinkwrap would allow it to slide in.
Its listed as a 25mm thickness, like the eXtreme v2.

Thanx!

Update on Starter shaft

I received a PM here on RR from Andy Yu from Assurance RC asking for my mailing address to so he could send me a new starter shaft. I had sent him an e-mail a while back on this so I was not expecting a PM on here but hey whatever works. This is all I want, for Align and all the other Hobby related Manufacturers and business to stand behind the products they produce and ditribute. I appreciate Andy and Assurance doing the right thing. I received the shaft this past Friday (09/25/09).

Now I was told in another topic regarding starter shafts that if the shaft was not hardened I could Harden the shaft myself. Does anyone know if the Align shaft is Hardened or not?
Hi Guys, I am a Jeweler by trade, and I noticed a long time ago that some wands are made of material that is very soft. So I started to experiment a little. I now take my wand and heat the tip with a torch until it glows red, I then quench it in cold water. this is called Anealing, and it tempers the metal to make it very hard. I'm not saying anyone should do this, all I'm saying is this works for me, and I am experienced in metal working. Just a side note if you heat metal to glow red then let it air cool, you will make it very soft, the opposite effect of quick cooling. Also remember that doing this will void your warantee on replacement shafts.
I am considering this but I also have a Hirobo hardened starter shaft that I ordered before receiving the PM from Andy (yes I had given up) and was going to drill holes in the shaft but then I was told it was hard to drill Hardened metal.

So if the Align shaft is not hardened should I actually try the aformentioned technique?

A lot of interesting reading on heat treating tool steel

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annealing_%28metallurgy%29

http://www.moldmakingtechnology.com...les/110002.html

http://www.threeplanes.net/toolsteel.html

http://www.wisetool.com/designation/treatment.htm

From what I have read the process of 'Annealing' technically is to soften the metal. Seems like one way to get strength to tool steel is to add carbon via a special salt applied during the annealing process then hardening via an oil bath from the austenite state. Interesting to learn that steel looses it's magnetic properties once heated to the austenite state.

Hardening does not sound as simple in those articles as the guy in the other topic made it sound.

Replace a 25 year old stater

So guys besides the worn out starter shaft issue, how are these starters?
If I buy returning for repairs/replacement is not a option. Deepest darkest South Africa does not get good RC service, so I import.

Just an update, the sound I was hearing was due to a low battery in the align starter. All is well, for now. If it comes back, I'll try the purple velcro
