› Any thoughts on the Hacker E-Turbine series for a90

Same as subject. I am thinking of using the A50-14L E-Turbine for my R90 E conversion. I know the scorpion 560 is very popular, but I am a Hacker man myself. From the looking at the numbers they are very close in performance. With the added benefit of a slightly lower KV, which should make gearing easier.

Just looking for thoughts, comments and crits.

Thanks, Nick

Actually the lower Kv will be better. The best gearing possible is a 95T main with a 9T pinion. I was using the 560 Kv motor but will be switching it out for a 500 kv motor instead.

If you skip me I can't play!

I have noticed that most are using either the 560 or 500. the only other concern I would have with the Hacker is that they are only rating it for 3000 watts. On 10s that would be fine, but on 12s it can run upwards of 4500 watts.

With the 95T main and 9T pinion you wont be anywhere near that 3000 watts on 10S, and I think you'll still be ok on 12S.

Were you using the standard A50 or the A50 E-Turbine version?

Asking because there is a big difference in KV, and the A50-14L is built for 12S.

The A50-14L Electric Turbine has a built in fan and runs at 540KV, perfect for 12S.

Still sucks what happened though.

here are the specs on the s 550kv and it does have a fan

The Hacker A50 Series motors are designed for the very popular .46 to .90-size models. Intended as a direct replacement to power your model with quiet and clean electric power. The 10-pole outrunner design creates MASSIVE TORQUE, therefore larger direct drive props can be used without the need for a gearbox. This motor features oversized bearings, curved neo-magnets and high efficiency stator design. Additionally you will find a special large concentric bearing located in the rotor to support the rotating mass during extreme 3D maneuvers. A cooling fan is mounted on the motor for closed cowling or helicopter applications to provide proper motor cooling. Integrated 8mm threaded shaft and prop adapter for super reliability.

Specifications:
Kv (rpm/V): 550
Max Power (W): 2000W
Max Amp (15 sec): 55A
Max Efficiency: 85%
Io (No load A): 3.9A
Rm (Resistance): 0.024Ohm
Shaft Diameter: 6mm
Motor Diameter: 48mm
Motor Length: 56.8mm
Motor Weight: 370g
Built in Fan: Dual Fan
Max Rpm: 22,000
Poles: 10
Case: Outrunner
ESC Timing: 20-25 deg
ESC Switching Freq.: 8KHz

Are you talking about 2 different motors? According to Aero-model, the A50-14S is only 425KV, and meant for a 5S lipo.

The one I have is 550 Kv and according to hacker when it was purchased it was the new design for helis with built in fan and for up to 12s

seems the the L series is 540kv and 2 fans

Don't know about the 14s you have listed at 425KV and 5s limitation with 5 s and 425kv that wouldn't work

I think you are confusing yourself. In your own post you stated you had the A50-14S. Which is why I asked the questions I did.

The motor I am referring to in my original post is this one

There are two versions of the A50 the airplane and the heli/turbine, this is why you are confused.

Actually you're right, there was also the plane/heli version that had the very large can bearing that failed(I have one but found a good bearing for it). They redesigned the motor with a vented spacer around the outside and a smaller bearing to support the motor can that wasn't as prone to failure.

The spec says
Max Rpm: 22,000
550 x 44.4 is 24,420. PJ remember the Hacker were tried to run on 10S where the max rpm was 13,000, the one you just mentioned about the bearing? Maybe a couple thousand more rpm won't hurt this motor.

Yeah, the bearing was rated at that, Hacker dropped the ball on that one. Once I got that good bearing from Gopher Bearing it ran great and never had a problem (other than getting warm which all hackers do). I also have a A50 10S that has the newer design. Like I said it has a vented spacer where the large bearing was in the 12S. So far it's held up to many flights on 9-10S without problem. I'm sure the turbine version probably has the newer design and better bearings. Hey look at all the scorpions with bearing problems. Even Actro has had problems, when I got my Actro back from warranty repair they replaced the lower bearing with a contact seal bearing to keep the grease in. I've went one step further and bought Stainless Steel Rubber Contact Seal bearings for the Actros and Scorpions since they use the same size 8x16x5 I was able to get a 10 pack for $30 shipped.

I must ask, how does this new Hacker "turbine" motor sound, does it have a different sound or does the turbine refer to i'ts power output only

It sounds like any other brushless motor. They call it a Turbine because of it's kV rating. High rpm per volt for it's size used in electric ducted fans.
