ginnz rrApprentice MB,Canada | well, i bought a used Dx7 from BlBills here on RR, and received it in perfect condition. the battery in it was dead as the radio was on when it arrived.so not wanting to wait for charging. i had a TP 2100 mAh 20C lipo kicking around, one of the silver ones. i clipped the old stock battery out and hooked the TP lipo up, and slid it in. it was the only 3S pack that would fit in the battery compartment, if SpeKtrum would have made the compartment 5mm wider, almost any of my 3S packs would have fit.now i got power baby! what an easy mod!ginnz.

Micro-Maniac rrElite Veteran Pasco,Washington Formerly: Captain Chaos | I'm using an old 15C 2100 pro-lite in mine - But the fit in the tray was so tight that it was bowing the pack so I ended up just cutting out the lower wall of the battery tray so theres plenty of room for it now - If you split the tx case you'll see there is a space between the battery tray and outer case that a hacksaw blade fits into perfectly for a nice guided cut

Avropilot rrVeteran Murfreesboro, Tennessee | Seriously, Anytime I tell someone about installing a lipo in the transmitter they all have this opinion of it's dangerous and so on. They knock something they know nothing about. I've had one in mine for over two years. How much proof do they need?Waiting for parts

dave75d rrKey Veteran Jacksonville, FL | i'm proof right here! take it out to charge, and its never been an issue. if they were that bad, we shouldnt be flying with them either.ten grand in helis and all i can do is hover

cdrking rrElite Veteran Seattle | You guys sure seem like you have to defend your TX LiPo's.To hover is divine, the alternative is rather PLANE.

9387ASH rrElite Veteran UK | Unfortunately I have had to repair some sets that have had LiPo's in them. When a transistor blows due to the over-voltage, they burn a nice hole in the pcb !!

Wingman77 rrProfessor Pulaski Tennessee | if you are going to put a 3s lipo on a tx you need a resister to drop the voltage about 1.5v. I realy want to put a lipo in my Dx7, when my ni-mh dies it will get a lipo.

Micro-Maniac rrElite Veteran Pasco,Washington Formerly: Captain Chaos | Only about 1/2V - The battery fuel gauge is actually calibrated for 8 AA alkalines (8x1.5V=12V) which is why you never see it completely full when using a nihm pack which only reaches about 11.5V fully charged and usually quickly drifts down to around 10.8V

ginnz rrApprentice MB,Canada | no resisters or diodes here either.....and next, im thinking of putting an align glo-driver in the TX somewhere, with a white, or blue el wire around the perimeter of the screen, so i can light up the screen, ill have a switch on it to turn it on and off.and ill do the TX on LCD mod also when i do the backlight.i really wish spektrum would have had a back lit lcd from the factory.....

Micro-Maniac rrElite Veteran Pasco,Washington Formerly: Captain Chaos | From my understanding the radio pulls about 180mah (DSM2 mode?)So at Ni pack voltage this would equate to about 2.0WA cartridge of Alkalines would be about 2.1WAnd a Lipo would be about 2.2W(Double for DSM1 mode?(4Watts?) - I do use DSM1 RXs too with no issues so people using only DSM2 RXs shouldn't even worry in the slightest IMO)I find it a little hard to believe it can't handle just an extra .1-.2W from the extra 1/2-1V of a Lipo over Alkaline and Nickel unless I'm looking at this all wrongI greatly respect 9387ASH's knowledge and advice but I find it difficult to believe the damage to these radios was caused just from using Lipos alone without additional user abuse of some sort or faulty component etcI too have been running my DX7 for a year now on Lipo without a diode and really don't see enough reason to bother with one as I have yet to hear of anyone not working for Horizon report any damage caused from using a LipoPeople would definitely be on here warning "Lipo killed my TX" and we'd still have to weed out misplaced blame cases but here we are with no first-party claims at all at least that I've ever seen so I wouldn't sweat it too muchIf one was really worried about it then I think a single diode would be plenty and 2 would be overkill - (BTW if you do use a diode then remember not to try to charge the pack through it - Either put the diode on the radio side of the battery plug and remove the battery to charge or charge via the balance leads)Most people who recommend diodes compare to nominal or fully charged Nickel voltages rather than Alkaline voltage the system is calibrated to - 1-2V more vs Nickel sounds alarming if you don't actually calculate the wattage whereas who would give +1/2V vs Alkaline even a second thought?http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/p2751049/
