This came from a friend:

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT &T Service Technician (could also be Telus) who was conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.

Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number..

I was further informed that this scam has been originat ing from many local jails/prisons DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.

The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW.

After checking with Verizon they also said it was true, so do not dial 90# for anyone !!!!!

It's a partial truth, but what your friend just sent you is an internet hoax.

This scam only works if your telephone is
served by a private branch exchange (PBX)
or private automatic branch exchange (PABX).

Meaning, if it's your private residential line, don't even worry about it.

From the FCC:

That email that has been circulating around for over 10 years, and it's bull****.

There is a very fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness.'

Better safe than sorry. If anything like that calls me, I tell them thanks and call back on a number I know goes to the legitimate business. My wife's bank called one time and she started to talk with then. I told her to hang up and call them back. She had to sit and screw around with the voice menu and stay on hold, and ended up back to the person who called. They understood, but she was pissed at me. Oh well, better pissed than have her bank account cleaned out by a scammer. Like Reagan said, "Trust, but verify"....
