Is it possible to safely practice autos with the Belt CP? Like just dropping the collective and aiming for the ground?

What goes up must come down...and when it does it'll probably be expensive.

yes and no?

You know you have to do them in Idleup right? you can start by doing them a foot off the ground just flaring them to get the feel of the blade momentum. Then work your way up the higher you go the more negative you need to add. I would suggest a heavier blade than Esky woodies like the TREX fake carbons. They are about twice the weight 450 size helis just dont really auto very well. Now before I get chased out of town by pitchfork let me say I am comparing it to my raptor .30. And yes it does auto with not even half as much collective management as my TREX450 with said carbon looking blades. I really gotta look them up and see what kind of composite they are.

EDIT: OOOPS!! forgot the right switch on a stock radio is a trainer switch. So NO you cant.

You can not auto a stock Belt-CP with the stock radio unless the motor fails and you are in idle-up, as there is no throttle hold.

If you are on a better radio then yes and no. Yes it is possible, no not for most all the people flying them.

Do you need to be in idle up because you need negative pitch for autos?

yes negative pitch keeps momentum in the blades as you come down then you go positive the last foot or two off the ground depending a lot on the size of the heli and set it down smooth. But like TJ said you got to completely kill the throttle go negative descending fast enough to keep the blades spinning fast enough to flare it at the end and set it down smoothly but since the 450 size heli's are so light and dont have much rotor mass or disk loading it is pretty difficult to do they tend to be more of a controlled crash than a smooth auto.

It is all timing keeping the negative descent fast enough till the flare and not flaring (positive pitch) to early so it doesnt just drop and fall over.

Do you have a throttle hold on your radio? If so here is how I did my first auto. Well some will argue its not an auto but if you kill the power to the motor it is rotating on its own or auto.

spool up the heli and go into idleup while on the ground liftoff 6" hit throttle hold and give almost full positive collective you will see and feel the flare.

After that just go a little higher till you get a foot or two off the ground and can do it. Thats about where the blades loose momentum. After 1-2ft you have to start adding negative just work at it till you get it. Would suggest doing it on grass you may have a tip over.

yeah, i wouldn't recommend practicing autos on the belt-cp - you basically gotta come in really hot and have ONE chance to bite into the pitch at exactly the right time.

Watch at YouTube

if you wanna practice, i recommend at least a 50 size where you'll have several chances in case you dig into the collective too early.
