I recently replaced the entire tail assembly on my Predator Max 90 and now have the problem that it easily rotates on the end of the tail boom. No matter how hard I tighter down on the gearbox socket screws it can still be relatively easily rotated on the boom. I thought perhaps this was just as tight as it could get, but when I spool up the blades, the tail begins to rotate about 30 deg on the boom. What keeps the gearbox from rotating? Am I missing something in the installation procedure? When I look at the instruction manual I do not see anything... Since the tailboom is round & not hexagonal it seems very prone to this rotation problem. Is it only the tightening down of the gearbox that keeps it in place?

Thanks,
James

Predator gearbox

The tail gear box has round internal protrusion on either side that engage two corresponding holes in the end of the tail boom. You must assemble the gear box onto the tail boom and make sure these protrusions are in their respective holes in the boom. You can't just assemble the tail gear box, then slide it onto the boom. If you've assembled it correctly, the boom can get worn after long use, allowing the tail box to twist around. I glue mine on with JB weld or they eventually will come loose. Hope this helps. steve.

Steve, thanks a lot... I just took it apart & noticed two problems... the holes you mentioned at the end of the boom were actually ripped open on each side... and the protrusions inside the gear box were severely worn off... I'm ordering a new tailboom & gear box to replace. This must've happened in earlier mishaps... I think I've actually been living with this problem for a while now & just never realizing. Thanks a lot for your help!

Tail gear box

I had the same problem with mine. The tail fin mounts to the side of the gear box. Any contact with the ground will push the fin up and try to rotate the gear box on the tail boom. Eventually the holes get egged out or the little protuberances get sheared off or both, allowing the gear box to rotate as you've described. A new one will do the same thing if you don't glue it. JB weld has held well enough to solve the problem for me, but doesn't stick so well to the plastic that I can't gently pry it loose if I need to disassemble. Hope this helps. steve.
