I've recently switch over from a Futaba 9CHP (35MHz) to a JR DSX12 (2.4GHz) and I want to set up the gyro gain for my GY611 through the TX. I'm also running an Arizona reg.
Can anyone guide me through the set up please so as I can change the gain in the TX and have the settings linked to the flight mode switch ? I not really interested in rate mode, just heading hold.
Thanks,
Mike.

Hey Mike,

You've got a couple of choices I think mate which way you do this;

1. You could use the GEAR channel in your transmitter to control the gain, as like you say you don't really have a need to switch into rate mode I'd say this is your best option.
With the GY601/611 it's easy as it has been said for some time to setup your gain values to show 38 on the gyro amplifier, so as you flick between A (AVCS) and N (Rate Mode) make sure these values show 38 and your all set and good to go.

2. But if you want to change modes or gain settings dependant on flight mode I'd set your gain channel connection to AUX3 I think it is which can be setup/assigned as auto and changes with the flight mode switch.
I use this function to control my govenor as I can have 3 settings, 0=off, 1= say about 85% throttle and 2= 98% 3D rpm.

Personally I'd go with the first option and use the GEAR channel to control gyro gain and perhaps use the flight mode switching option for your govenor to give you more flexability?

Are you using an Arizona reg? This is what I run on my 700N and again it's easy to configure, plug the gain lead from the Arizona into GEAR or AUX3 and the rudder connection to the rudder port on the receiver.

I am going to check but I am 99% sure it's AUX3 which can be set to switch with flight modes, I know it replaces the rudder dual rate switch activation option.

Hope this helps in some way? Still loving my DSX12 ;-)

Hiya,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes I run an Arizona reg and it's connected as you described, gain lead to gear on the RX and rudd to rudd. I have my gain reading 35% on the 611 control box, this was acheived by adjusting the gear atv's in the TX. It works fine, but it just doesn't seam to make the best use of the TX menu fuctions and thought there must be a better way ? I guess I'm still adjusting from my old Futaba 9CHP.
I'm not running a gov at present. Took my Revlock off and have been playing with the curves. I thought it would be a good exercise to manually get it running well. I may add a Rev Max later, but have gone off the gov, as it's always playing 'catch up'.
Thanks,
Mike.

Hey Matey,

Your welcome.

If you can I'd bump up the gain value on the amplifier box to 38 in either mode, as this seems to be the best setting recommeneded by Jason Krause. Some have come in and said you can run the gain higher, but I have always stuck with 38 when setting up GY's and they hold great at this.

I fully understand your line of thinking, but like you say as you hardly ever fly now in rate mode there is no real need to over complicate the gain control. The only time I may use rate mode is when I place the model out on the patch and flick into rate mode for a few seconds to re-centre the tail baldes before lift off.

It's good practice to be ok with setting up your pitch & throttle curves to suit, up until a few years ago I never flew govenors at all just relying on well setup curves. The Turbine I flew also was done so on curves alone, it does take time to set them up accordingly but it's well worth it.

I'd never tried a RevMax, sticking to the RevLock and now the stock Align govenors which work well I feel and on all my IC models I use the gyro gain page to allow me to set 3 individual head speeds linked to my flight mode switch.
