I don't know about your modified engine but I was getting a little of what you are talking about,I think, and my carb was set at exactly 1.5 turns out. I opened it,richen it, 1/8 turn and it went away and runs with so much more power. Just a thought.

If you have the black phenolic carb insulator , check and see if it is warped. My caused sporaidc hiccups until it finally caused a flame out. If the gasket is wet when you take of the carb , it is leaking.
I have the aluminum one with teflon gasket and my bolts are not so long that they warp it.

Thanks for the gap setting. Both new ones were .25 out of the box.

I fly tomorrow and am planning on starting at 1-5/8 turns on both high and low needles. Then I'll lean from there.

Thanks for the info guys.

Is there a known problem with bolt length?
I noticed when I tightened mine that one seemed like it bottomed out before it was tight so I added a washer.

I believe that is exactly what happened to mine. When the last owner had it, he must have bottomed out just a sconch, and that was enough tension to warp it when it got hot.

Florida pilot, using new plugs after each run is a great litmus test. Plug reading is science, for sure.

My goal is always to make it black, then clean it up.

Good luck.

Why Hover a Yak, when a Heli does it better?

Helis was the best run yet. No over revs on decents and easy start with good power in climb. However, the engine shimmed the canopy every once in awhile. Seems Needle valves just not exact. DID use a new NKG plug and tie-wrapped all hose connections between fuel magnet and carburetor. Ended up with Lo and Hi needles at 1-1/4 turns open.

Now if I can just get that intermittent shake out of it I can start to do loops, flips and tic-tocs.

Any ideas?

1.25 on high of a ported engine seems like not enough. Typically, the more the engine is ported, the more fuel it wants, hence the power. How does plug look? I think the shimmy in canopy may be sign of lean. Typically a rich setting will result in a tail kick miss.

Were you able to temp it at these settings?

OK, Took it out to the field. Set the needles at Hi=1-5/8, Lo=1-1/2 turns. Could not get it off idle. Just sat there with throttle almost wide open and would not go off idle. Sounded like it was going to stall due to too much fuel. Closed Hi=1-1/2 and it flew great except for canopy shimmy. Engine did not sound like it was 4 stroking.

So I tried closing needles until I got to 1-1/4 on both. Did not want to lean anymore for fear of burning piston. Forgot to check temperature.

The plug is dark brown. Remember this was a brand new plug before the flights.

I will try to get temp readings when I fly it again.

Oh, Yeah, I forgot that I soldered in the hole in the throttle valve plate. I could not shut the engine down with the throttle closed and the hole in the plate. Plugged the hole and now it shuts down.

Other than the canopy shake, how was the power at 1.25 each (climbouts?) Is this a modded Toxic or just balanced toxic? The plug certainly shows it is getting the fuel. There is a float valve in the carb on a spring. If this wasn't set with the "WT" gap, that may answer why your needles are different then most 643's. Doesn't necessarily mean anything wrong. Assuming everything on heli is balanced, and looking at the plug I would guess that the shake is from a still rich setting. Temp the engine and verify it is running cool (160's?), if so, I would tweak in the high until you get the right temp (220) and see if the shake doesn't go away. In other words, as long as you watch the temp, you wont hurt the engine keeping it in the 220 range. Just tweak a little at a time until you find the temp.

Keep me posted

Zman,

Power in climb outs is excellent. The engine hardly bogs with max pitch, 10 deg. The engine has the following mods:
1. Lighten the piston from about 25g to around 22g
2. Pull the crank shaft and make it true
3. Relieve the side skirt and underside of the piston
4. Rework the Exhaust, Transfer and Intake porting
5. Increase compression.
6. Power range will go from 9,000-10500 to 11,500 to 13,200 rpm

Float valve has never been checked. I'm in process of getting the tool.

Thanks for the info. Won't get to fly again until Sunday but will bring temp gun and check as you say.

Where on the engine should I check temp?

Thanks again,

As soon as you can get blades stopped after killing engine, turn it over and point the temp gun around the 3rd fin. Move it around just a little and you will find the hottest spot (typically the combustion). You want read on cylinder and not fins but just move it around a little and find hot spot. A helper here is helpful although you can do it solo, just watch that muffler!

Best flight of my Predator ever

Flew today with the engine purring. Temperature got to around 170+ deg F. Just leaned it a bit at a time until the canopy shudder went away. Started and the temp was around 150. This could still be a bit rich. Next weekend I may lean it out a bit more. After it started running smooth I just did not have the heart to mess with it anymore. I've waited weeks, no months, to get this heli running and flying good. Did a litte inverted, flips and BIG loops. The engine just kept running smooth. Bogged it a bit going up in the loop. So, maybe a little leaner will get a bit more power. I'll watch the temp and keep it below 220.

Thanks again guys you sure helped me get my Predator running great.
